Fall semester starts off “normal” at Jones College
ELLISVILLE – The first day of the fall semester Monday, August 23, seemed to be more “normal” according to students and administrators at Jones College. After a year of virtual and/or hybrid classes, students are meeting in person while wearing masks and trying to physically distance themselves.
“The campus feels alive today with activity and excitement! We are thrilled to be able to welcome students back to class in a traditional setting and we are offering some of the more ‘normal’ activities we all have missed,” said Dr. Finee’ Ruffin, Jones College Executive Vice President, Chief Enrollment Management, Information Technology and Marketing Officer.
With everyone back on campus, finding a parking spot was challenging, as usual. Freshmen students like Ariyonne Varra of Lake, and Kenaz Gaddis of Columbia were actively searching for their next classes and dodging cars as they traveled across campus.
“It’s going really well today,” said Varra a nursing major. “There’s a nice vibe here and everyone has been so helpful.”
As a member of the colorguard in the Maroon Typhoon Marching Band, Gaddis added, “Everybody has been very friendly. I’m really looking forward to the first performance for the band and pep rally next week during ‘Meet the Bobcats.’”
Especially happy to be living on campus are freshmen, Amberlyn Holifield of Leakesville, and Lily Hendrix of Sumrall. They said being at Jones College this semester has been refreshing.
“I love living on campus because it is so easy to meet people, especially after last year with everything being virtual,” said Hendrix who is majoring in elementary education.
Holifield said she likes living on campus for the convenience. “Besides meeting a lot of people, it’s easier to get to classes, and I don’t have to wake up as early!”
As a dual-enrolled student last year, freshmen, Danielle Fenton of Laurel said she is excited to be able to take traditional classes at Jones College this fall.
“I didn’t mind virtual classes too much; it was actually easier to ‘go to’ class when it fit my schedule. However, I missed the social aspects of college. I am hopeful this year will be much better than last year.”

JC’s Davis begins 30th season as Touch of Gold Choreographer
ELLISVILLE –The Jones College Maroon Typhoon Marching Band has been led by some incredible directors over its 90-year history. However, only one band director, Jeff Brown has served just three years longer than Touch of Gold Dance Team Choreographer, Lora Davis. The Jones College 1989 graduate was a member of the Touch of Gold Team before making dance her career for more than 30 years. As choreographer for the dancers, Davis has traveled across the country with the band ensuring her team dazzles the crowd with their routines.
“Reflecting on all the band camps over the last 30 years, the big trips to perform in parades in Chicago, Dallas, New York City and Washington D.C., I have fond memories of the students, their families and the chaperones who have helped over the years. I particularly remember, Willie and Joyce Rigdon, who recently passed. They were a precious couple who poured into students for decades, including me,” said Davis.
The accomplished dancer/choreographer opened her Dance Arts Studio in Ellisville, in 1992. Many of the Touch of Gold dancers consider the studio a second home as they learn routines and perfect skills.
“I appreciate the opportunity to continue to be able to do what I love and offer scholarship opportunities for JC dance students,” said Davis. “I was in their shoes here at Jones and I was able to choreograph some as a student. This college is really a special place and I’m grateful to still be able to share my talent and love for dance with the next generation of ladies.”
JC sophomore Morgan Breland is especially happy to be able to continue her relationship with Davis who could be called the “Dancing Queen.” Spanning nearly four decades, Davis has been inspiring dancers like Breland who said she began her love for dance at Lora Davis’s studio in Ellisville, 14 years ago. The Ellisville resident said she is especially excited to continue dancing for the former Saintsation and Breland’s South Jones High School Bravette choreographer for one more year.
“Over the years, Lora has been a role model for me, as well as thousands of others. It has been a joy to continue to have her in my life at Jones College. She sets high standards for Touch of Gold and spends a lot of time working with the team. I am looking forward to making memories and performing with the best band with the best directors around, JC Maroon Typhoon!” said Breland.
Especially happy to have Davis on the staff of the Maroon Typhoon Marching Band is the Director of Bands, Dr. Ben Burge.
“Lora is a musician, specifically she plays piano. I can give her the drill and music and she knows how to interpret the songs, how to count the routine off and she enhances the overall show with her dancers. I don’t think everyone understands how unique it is to have a dance teacher who knows how to read music and who can read drill instructions. Most schools and colleges have a faculty member who may have some knowledge of dance. Lora is a lady with many talents and we’re especially grateful to have her on our team!” said Burge.
The Maroon Typhoon’s “Styleish” show will be performed during pre-game and half-time at all JC home football games.
Jones College’s Maroon Typhoon prepares a “Styleish” show
ELLISVILLE – Jones College’s 2021-22 Maroon Typhoon Marching Band is ready to blow fans away with a “Styleish” show this fall. Being fortunate to finish a week of band camp after having it canceled last year, the approximately 160 members endured the Mississippi heat fine-tuning their technical and marching skills. Director of Bands, Dr. Ben Burge is thrilled with the group’s accomplishments after an intense week of drills.
“This group of resilient, young people has been a joy to work with during Band Camp,” said Burge. “COVID-19 has impacted them in so many ways. I am glad we were able to get through this very important week of training with almost everyone! I am hopeful we will be able to continue to provide a wonderful college experience for them at Jones. They have already proven to be very flexible and very hardworking. I am looking forward to showing the Jones family what they can do!”
Sophomore Morgan Breland of Ellisville is especially happy to be able to participate in Band Camp this year. The South Jones High School graduate enjoyed her time on the Bravette dance team and was looking forward to coming to Jones College her freshman year before everything was canceled. This year, she almost missed out again because the COVID-19 virus kept her isolated just before Band Camp.
“Although COVID-19 guidelines have strongly impacted our normal activities, we have made the best of the situation. I recently battled COVID-19 myself and have worked hard to get my body prepared for our recent Band Camp. Although the days were hot and tiring, we were all proud to be back at Jones College. It takes all of us giving 100%,” said Breland.
Realizing many students did not get to complete their high school band experience and have missed out on so many normal and traditional experiences because of COVID-19, Burge said band members are grateful for the opportunity to perform again.
“They have missed out on so many normal and traditional experiences because of COVID-19. With the protocols in place at Jones College, I am hopeful COVID-19 won’t interrupt our performances this fall,” said Burge.
This year’s “Styleish” half-time show features the music of entertainment icons Harry Styles and Billie Eilish. The show begins with, “No Time to Die” from the 007 blockbuster movie by the same name. The nine-member Touch of Gold dance team will be featured in “Golden” by Harry Styles and again in the pregame show to the 1968 chart-topper, “Bend Me Shape Me” by the American Breed. The Percussion section and the weapon line are highlighted in, “You Should See Me in a Crown.” The show ends with the One Direction hit, “Steal my Girl” and “Bad Guy.”
JC Sophomore, Emma Burge of Oak Grove will lead the band as Drum Major, joined by sophomore Genna Ramey of Leroy, Alabama and freshman, Cambry Holiefield of Laurel-Northeast Jones. Also guiding the Maroon Typhoon in her eighth season is Assistant Director of Bands and flute instructor, Dr. Lindsey Keay, with percussion instructor, Dr. Josh Frans in his third year, and woodwinds instructor, Michelle Graham beginning her fourth season at Jones. Joining the staff as brass instructor, is former Marine Band member, Caleb Owenby. Lora Davis, the Touch of Gold choreographer/advisor, and 1989 Jones alumna, returns for her 30th season.
“I appreciate the opportunity to continue to be able to do what I love and offer scholarship opportunities for dance students,” said Davis. “Reflecting on all the band camps over the years, the big trips to perform in parades in Chicago, Dallas, New York City and Washington D.C., I have fond memories of the students, their families and the chaperones who have helped over the years. I particularly remember, Willie and Joyce Rigdon, who recently passed. They were a precious couple who poured into students for decades, including me.”
Breland said she began her love for dancing at Lora Davis’s dance studio in Ellisville, 14 years ago. The sophomore said she is especially excited to continue dancing for the former Saintsation and South Jones High School Bravette choreographer for one more year.
Upcoming performances of the Maroon Typhoon include the “Meet the Bobcats” pep rally on Thursday, August 26, at 6 p.m. in Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field. The Bobcats will go up against Northeast CC in the first home football game on Thursday, September 2, at 7 p.m. A week later, on September 9, Jones will face Northwest CC and on September 30, Jones will square off against Hinds CC. Appearances in October include Homecoming on Saturday, October 9, at 2 p.m. when the Bobcats meet the Southwest CC Bears. The last home football game is between Gulf Coast CC on Thursday, October 21, at 7 p.m. For more information about the Jones College Fine Arts Department, contact 601-477-4203. Jones College Practical Nursing graduates enter profession at critical time
ELLISVILLE – Thirty new, Practical Nursing graduates from Jones College are entering the profession at the most critical time. They were challenged during their education and will most likely continue to be challenged in their careers. Director of the Practical Nursing Program at Jones, Amy Myers said she is proud of their accomplishments, and she is confident they are prepared to make a positive impact in the medical profession.
“These graduates have completed nursing school during a time of uncertainty. The pandemic forced our graduates to complete much of their classwork online. Learning difficult, nursing content in an online format is no easy feat! Many students also faced financial and personal challenges, persevering despite it all. I am excited for the opportunities our graduates will have to better their own lives and those of their future patients,” said Myers.
Three students were honored for their accomplishments during the three-semester program. Jimmy Brazell of Waynesboro earned the Academic Excellence Award for having the highest academic average. The Rising Star Award was
presented to Amaya Tavarez of Silver Creek for her continuous dedication and growth in the classroom and clinical setting, and her positive attitude and perseverance which enriched her professionalism and nursing knowledge. Dustin Lambert of Raleigh was honored to receive the Florence Nightingale Award amongst the full-time practical nursing program graduates by Jones College faculty who believe he exhibits the qualities of the founder of nursing, with his
professionalism, integrity and selfless attitude.
The Pinning and Graduation Ceremony ended with the traditional “Lamp Lighting” inspired by the founder of nursing, Florence Nightengale who carried a lamp to help wounded soldiers during the Crimean War in 1854. For more information about the Practical Nursing Program, check out the website: https://www.jcjc.edu/programs/practicalnursing/
