From Fields to Frontiers: Dr. Larry Guthrie’s Legacy of Innovation and Education
Posted 01/28/2025
Dr. Larry D. Guthrie’s story is one of perseverance, excellence, and a lifelong commitment to education and innovation. It begins humbly in Bullock County, Alabama, where a determined young man hitchhiked across state lines in pursuit of an education. His journey led him to Jones College, where a football scholarship laid the foundation for a remarkable athletic, academic and professional career.
At Jones College, Dr. Guthrie cultivated the skills and determination that would propel him forward. “The quality education and foundation right here at Jones Junior College prepared me for McNeese, and McNeese followed through and prepared me for Auburn University,” Dr. Guthrie reflected.
After graduating from McNeese State University with a degree in Agriculture and Business, he began graduate work at Auburn University, focusing on dairy science. He earned his master’s degree in Dairy Cattle Nutrition before moving to Louisiana State University, where he completed a Ph.D. and embarked on groundbreaking research. His studies on safe feeding practices for high-producing dairy cows revolutionized the dairy industry, setting new standards and improving production across the globe.
Dr. Guthrie’s influence extended far beyond the laboratory. As a Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia, he earned the respect of peers and students alike. Upon retirement, he was honored for his lifelong contributions, including initiating youth programs like the Dairy Heifer Show for 4-H and FFA participants, inspiring countless young people to pursue careers in agriculture.
Over the years, Dr. Guthrie’s work has reached beyond U.S. borders, through collaborations with international organizations like the USDA, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the U.S. Feed Grains Council. His research, widely published in leading journals, has shaped agricultural practices worldwide, ensuring that dairy products remain safe, affordable, and accessible.
Throughout his journey, Dr. Guthrie credits Jones College as the pivotal starting point. “Jones gave me the confidence to handle situations and to trust God’s plan,” he shared. “You don’t see the whole picture at the time, but you keep plowing on.”
During the Homecoming Alumni Luncheon, Jones College President, Dr. Jesse Smith (left) and Vice President of External Funding, Sabrina Young (right), bestowed the Legacy Award to Dr. Larry Guthrie of Watkinsville, Georgia for his lifetime of education, research and contributions to the dairy industry as an alumnus of JCJC.
