ELLISVILLE – If the play-offs were held today, we’d see some familiar teams facing each other. Presbyterian Christian, Stringer, Wayne County and West Jones are all at the top of their division standings. Closing in on the division leaders are Sacred Heart, Richton and Lawrence County high schools. These teams are likely to battle it out for the coveted crown in November, unless someone pulls an upset.

In week five matches, the Braves of South Jones manage to steal a win from Richton with a close match, 53-52. This puts Richton in fourth place with a 1-3 record and South Jones in second place behind Wayne County. The War Eagles whipped the Perry Central Bulldogs, 44-6. Perry Central has yet to find a “W” this season. Northeast Jones had the week off, but will face Fibonacci Division leader, Wayne County in the final week of regular competition.

Stringer beat Bay Springs in a landslide victory, 101-12. The Red Devils face the division’s third place team, the Quitman Panthers next week, who had a bye in week five of competition. Taylorsville “tricked” Sylva Bay for the win, 57-11. The Saints are in fourth place in the division 1-3, and the Tartars are in second place with two wins and a loss.

The Mustangs of West Jones lead the Newton Division with a 49-15 win over the Mize Bulldogs, who are fourth in the division, 1-2.   The second place Lions face Mize next week. This week, Raleigh was victorious over the Mt. Olive Pirates, 40-27. Mt. Olive will end the regular season winless since they have the last week of competition off.   The Laurel Tornadoes were off this week but will face the division leaders next week.

Pythagoras Division leader, the Bobcats of Presbyterian Christian pounded the Collins Tigers, 104-15. Collins is in last place with the loss against the dominant PCS team. The division’s second place team, Lawrence County had a bye this week but will go head-to-head with the number-one team in the final week of the regular season. Regardless of that outcome, the Cougars should earn a wildcard spot in the play-offs. Also likely to earn a wildcard, are the overall point’s leader, the Crusaders of Sacred Heart. They dominated over the Seminary Bulldogs, 92-12. Seminary and Collins are winless so far this season, but the Bulldogs are in fourth place with more points.

Mallory Vial of PCS remains the individual with the most correct-points average at 90 percent, beating out Lawrence County’s Ben Rushing’s 83 percent average. Stringer’s Chris Anderson moves up to third place from last week. He is tied with Presbyterian Christian’s Alicia Brown with an 80 percent accuracy rate.
