ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College piano faculty member, Dr. Theresa Sanchez is inviting the public to hear some familiar favorites from Bach, Chopin and Schubert in a free concert, Monday, October 21, at 7 p.m. in the M.P. Bush Fine Arts Auditorium.

I want to represent a cross-section of piano music by great piano composers from all the main eras.  Hence, Bach is the great Baroque composer, Schubert is late classical/early Romantic, and Chopin is full-fledged Romantic.  I also like to include music closer to our time, therefore the David L. McIntyre piece,” said Sanchez.

That piece by McIntyre, “Butterflies and Bobcats” will not be familiar to a lot of people but it is of particular interest to the JCJC family of Bobcats.

“‘Butterflies and Bobcats’ was written in 2004 by Canadian composer McIntyre for a national Canadian competition. Of course the title is appealing to us at Jones because of our mascot, the bobcat. Musically, the piece expresses the opposing elements of the title characters. It is virtuosic, imaginative and fun!” said Sanchez.

A faculty member at Jones since 1995, Sanchez has received the 2004 Faculty HEADWAE Award, has been named the 2007 Humanities Teacher of the Year, received a Faculty Appreciation award in 2010, and was the past president of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association.  Sanchez has collaborated on numerous projects performing throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and as a soloist with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra (including the compact disc Southern Nights), and The Wind Ensemble. She is featured as the soloist with the Meridian Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere performance and CD of the Carey Smith Piano Concerto. She was the soloist in Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Winds and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in recent performances with the Mississippi Wind Symphony.

Dr. Sanchez co-founded the Vicksburg International Chamber Music Festival and performed in each series with various outstanding artists. She has presented numerous lieder recitals with Viennese baritone Benno Schollum, and was the pianist for Mississippi Educational Television’s production of Rampal in Mississippi. Additionally, she has collaborated with many other well-known artists.
