ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College will be hosting its annual Black History Celebration on Tuesday, February 12, at 10:15 a.m. in the JCJC Fine Arts Auditorium. The program’s theme, “It’s Your Time to Make a Difference” will feature a guest speaker and special musical guests, the Laurel High School Gospel Choir. The public is invited to this free event.
The keynote speaker, Andre Heath is the Assistant to the Dean for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Southern Mississippi. The accomplished motivational speaker became one of 82 contestants from a pool of 30,000 participants from 116 countries to advance to the semifinals of the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. Some of the topics he speaks about include leadership, personal development and civic engagement. Heath was selected by the Mississippi Business Journal as one of its 2012 class of leaders in its, “Top 40 Under 40” because of his active leadership role in the state.
“The reason why we invited Mr. Heath is because he's a perfect example for our students to learn how to pursue efforts of leadership and civic engagement. I’m hoping our audience is inspired and realize that it's time for them to 'make a difference' because there are so many opportunities in our communities,” said Dr. Samuel Jones, JCJC Dean of Students. “It is always my hope that our students, faculty, staff, administration and our community understand that we need to work together to make life better for future generations. I believe Black History programs are a way for us to rewrite history and remember, reunite and rededicate ourselves to being the best people we can be.”
This rising star from Crystal Springs also serves as President of the Hattiesburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and is a member of the Petal School District Board of Trustees. Heath earned his B.S. degree in Psychology and his Masters of Education degree in Counseling and College Student Personnel. Heath is currently completing a Ph.D. in Human Capital Development.
