JCJC’s VP of Marketing to be Mississippi Development Authority chief marketing officer

ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College’s Vice President of Marketing, Marlo Dorsey will be expanding her marketing responsibilities as she begins her new job as the chief marketing officer for the Mississippi Development Authority.

“I am very thankful for this amazing opportunity,” said Dorsey. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of my new role with the state, but I will definitely miss being with my Jones family.”

Seven years ago JCJC president, Dr. Jesse Smith hired Dorsey to head up and expand the college’s marketing department. Under Dorsey’s leadership, the department has enjoyed statewide recognition of its work. Some of her accomplishments at Jones include the development of college magazines, Vision and the President’s Report, as well as implementing a branding and marketing plan, including logo development. She has also assisted with the college’s image nationally as it hosted political guests like former president Bill Clinton and presidential candidate, Newt Gingrich. In her role as Jones County’s chairwoman of the Economic Development Authority board, Dorsey worked with multiple agencies to entice GE Aviation to Ellisville.

“Preparing for a national audience, while also providing our area with the opportunity to host events like a presidential visit or a major economic development announcement was exciting. I thoroughly enjoy those types of challenges. It was an honor being a part of these events for Mississippi.” she said. I worked with talented group of people at the college, and I am grateful to my boss, Dr. Smith, who gave me the opportunities to make a difference.”

According to the Mississippi Development Authority’s website, it is the state’s lead economic and community development agency, with approximately 300 employees engaged in providing services to businesses, communities and workers throughout Mississippi. The agency works to recruit new business to the state and retain and expand existing Mississippi industry and business. Dorsey’s eight years on the EDA board, and her experience at JCJC made her an excellent candidate for the statewide position. Smith credits Dorsey with taking the college to new and great heights over her seven years and knows she’ll do the same for Mississippi.

“We had a vision of where we wanted to go with our marketing department when Marlo was hired. With her involvement on the EDA board and her economic development focus, along with her technical and marketing skills, she has helped us as a college to shine in the national and regional spotlight. She will certainly be an asset for our state and certainly JCJC in her new role, working for the advancement of the state. We wish her well and are very grateful for all her work. Our marketing department is second to none,” said Dr. Smith.
Prior to Dorsey’s arrival at Jones, public relations, graphic design, sports information and marketing was handled by one person. Smith said the marketing department will continue to move forward. With Dorsey’s departure, JCJC alumna and marketing and fashion merchandising instructor, Finee’ Ruffin will be taking over as the Director of Marketing. Additionally, her experience working with the recruiting department over the years and in her volunteer role with the EDA, Smith believes Ruffin will be ready for her new role at the college.

“Finee’ has been a bright and shining young faculty member who will bring a great skill set and energy to an already creative department. I am very confident in her abilities and look forward to seeing the accomplishments of our outstanding marketing department,” said Smith.
