ELLISVILLE - Enjoy a comfy atmosphere, cool jazz, coffee and refreshments with Jones County Junior College’s Java & Jazz on Thursday, November 15, 2012. This free evening of music features the JC Jazz band, the vocal jazz ensemble, JC Voices, the JC Jazz Combo and the JC Saxophone Ensemble at 7 p.m. in a new location, the Bobby Shows Exhibit Hall of the Ronald E. Whitehead Advanced Technology Center in Ellisville.

According to JC Jazz Director, Jeff Brown, “We have moved this concert to the Advanced Technology Center, which is larger, to try accommodate the growing audience.”

The jazz band will begin the journey of jazz featuring works by Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Billy Strayhorn along with a well-known tune recorded by Carlos Santana. In addition, Brown will premiere an original tune entitled “Lights.”  The eight-member improvisation group, JC Jazz Combo will also perform. Each performance is unique because the student’s solos are improvised, or not pre-written.

Conductor Dr. Susan Smith and accompanist Dr. Victoria Johnson will lead JC Voices as they take the audience on a musical journey of standards from the American Songbook. Two members of the select vocal ensemble from Taylorsville, Patience Coats and Kristie Reddoch will round out the vocal portion of the evening.

The Smooth Operator Saxophone Quartet, under the direction of Mrs. Meri Newell will be playing all types of classical and jazz literature including “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” and a great jazz standard by Fats Waller.
