Jones County Junior College’s Radionian staff brought home 22 awards, including top community college newspaper in the state, at the 14th annual O.C. McDavid Journalism Conference and Better Newspaper Contest, held March 29 in Jackson.
JCJC’s student newspaper also received first place honors for best Front Page, second place for Best Graphic and second place for Design.
First place winners included Ryan Phillips for Feature Photo; Nathan Burkett for Sports Feature; Kristina Mitchell for Sports Photo; Devin Fisher for Single Advertisement; and Erin Lowrey, Cassidi Bush, Miranda Farmer and Brittany Burge for Investigative Package.
Other winners included Cassidi Bush, second place for General News Story; Leland Yarnell, third place for Sports Column and second place for Sports Feature; Joe Pope, third place for General Interest Column; Murphy Matthews, second place for Feature Story; Brittany Burge, honorable mention for Feature Story; Seth Houston, third place for Editorial Cartoon; Michelle Sessions, third place for Single Advertisement; Trevor Gray and Chaning Green, third place for Investigative Package; Ty Miller, second place, Thomas Roney, third place and Samantha Bass, honorable mention, all for the General News Photo category.
In addition, the Radionian received a unique honor this year in the website category.
“Last year, there wasn’t an awards category for best website for community colleges because we had no competition. So this year, the awards committee decided our online edition, www.bobcatpress.com, could compete in the university category, and we received third place,” said Radionian advisor, Kelly Atwood. “Our website placed behind MSU and Delta State, which isn’t bad for a two-year college. I’m proud of all of my students for their hard work and happy that they were recognized for it.”
The Radionian is taking applications for the Fall 2012 semester. For more information, contact Atwood at Kelly.firstname.lastname@example.org or 601-477-4084.
