ELLISVILLE - Enjoy a comfy atmosphere, cool jazz, coffee and refreshments with Jones County Junior College’s Java & Jazz on Thursday, November 17, 2011. This free evening of music features the JC Jazz band, the vocal jazz ensemble, JC Voices, and the Jazz combo.

The two ensemble groups will be performing a centennial program of jazz tunes since 1911, when JCJC was established.  The jazz band, under the direction of Jeff Brown will begin the journey of jazz with many traditional jazz pieces such as “All Blues,” and “Night Train”.  In addition, there will more contemporary jazz tunes and one of Jeff Brown's newest tunes.

Concert goers will also have the chance to hear the JC Jazz Combo.  This group, in its third year, is made up of students wanting to improve their improvisational skills.  Each performance is unique because the student’s solos are improvised, or not pre-written.

Conductor Susan Smith and accompanist Victoria Johnson will assist JC Voices as they take the audience on a musical journey of the 10’s, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.  Some of the hits the select vocal ensemble will be performing include Alexander's Ragtime Band, “Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Come Fly With Me,”, “Blue Skies,” and many others.
