It’s been said that life is 10 percent what happens to a person and 90 percent how the person reacts to it. One man’s reaction led him down the path of success. Today, Dr. Samuel Jones, dean of student affairs at Jones County Junior College, uses his life’s story to motivate young people he encounters. That story is included in his book, The Man I Never Knew: How Leadership Can Be Developed by Faith, Family and Friends.

The inspiration for his book came from his time spent talking with college students, many of whom felt that their past hardships prevented them from being successful. In sharing his life’s story, Jones has shown them that they can use hardships as a springboard to success.

“I can see the influence that I have on people’s lives, and it’s very humbling,” said Jones. “I want students to understand we’ve all had things happen in our lives. Students see us in leadership positions, and they need to understand that the struggles they face in college are similar to what we faced. I want them to look at themselves and realize they can have an impact on someone else based on their own experiences.”

In the book, Jones explains how he learned to become a man because of the influence of several important people in his life. The work reflects the choices Jones made that led him to a position of leadership, sharing simple life experiences that can encourage and inspire readers to see leadership skills within themselves. He plans to write a leadership workbook to accompany the book.

Said Dr. Howell C. Garner, executive director of the Mississippi Community College Foundation, of the book: “What a great job of Dr. Jones expressing his thoughts and feelings about his past experiences. Two things I noticed right off – Dr. Jones did his research, using examples of other well-known leaders in history, and he demonstrated that he had an extraordinary recollection of his past and the people who meant so much to his mental and spiritual growth. The thing that was most impressive was that his story was so much from the heart, and it was Christ centered. I hope that means as much to other readers as it did to me. I can’t tell you how proud I am of this new author!”

Jones has a bachelor’s degree in advertising, master’s in public relations and a PhD in community college leadership. The former college athlete, who played at the University of Southern Mississippi and professional basketball in Finland, came to JCJC as the assistant basketball coach and eventually became dean of student affairs.

Through his consulting company, he travels across the country sharing his story with audiences at colleges, business organizations, churches and civic organizations. His book can be purchased at Books A Million, Barnes and Nobles, Wheatmark Publishing and www.amazon.com. Signed copies can be purchased through his website, www.drsamueljones.com and are available at the JCJC bookstore.
