Former Bobcat football players continue to shine on senior college level

ELLISVILLE – Several former Jones County Junior College football players continued to play well on the senior college level this weekend
Former Bobcat defensive tackle Robbie Mayers of Laurel led Delta State University in tackles in the Statesmen’s 27-7 victory over Fort Valley State (Ga.). Mayers had two sacks, three tackles for loss and seven total tackles. Other former Bobcats at DSU are offensive linemen Darrell Leopold of Laurel, Chase Sherman of D’Iberville and Evan Shaw of Oak Grove.
Delta State, 2-1, begins Gulf South Conference play at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Arkansas Tech.
Former Bobcat defensive tackle Jo’Nal White of Ruston, La, had two solo tackles, four assists and two sacks for minus 11 yards in Louisiana Tech’s 48-42 overtime victory over Central Arkansas.
Louisiana Tech, 1-1, hosts Houston at 6 p.m. on Saturday and the game will air on espn3.com.
Ex-JCJC wide receiver Tristan Purifoy had six receptions for 97 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown, to help No. 5 North Alabama defeat Glenville State, 48-21. The Lions will travel to Arlington, Texas, to take on third-ranked Abilene Christian at Cowboys Stadium at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Former Bobcat running back Justin Gaines, wide receiver Rashad Wynes, wide receiver Kylan Pollard and defensive lineman Josh Herring had big games to help Belhaven University defeat Mississippi College 35-31 on Saturday night at Jackson’s Newell Field.
Gaines, who prepped at Bay Springs, rushed 16 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns, including a 14-yard run, and had two receptions for nine yards. Pollard, of Laurel, had five receptions for 94 yards, including a 37-yard catch. Wynes, of Macon, Ga., had one carry for nine yards, returned two punts for nine yards and two kickoffs for 39 yards. Herring, of Bay Springs, had one solo tackle and six assists to lead the team with seven tackles.
Belhaven, 2-1, goes to Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) for a 12:30 p.m. start on Saturday.
Former Bobcat defensive end Ryan Robinson of Buford, Ga., had two solo tackles to help No. 9 Oklahoma State beat Arizona, 37-14. Ex-Bobcat defensive end Tyrunn Walker of New Iberia, La., had a solo tackle and a sack for minus seven yards to help Tulsa defeat Tulane, 31-3.
Oklahoma State, 2-0, travels to Tulsa, 1-1, to meet the Golden Hurricane at 9:10 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised by FSN.
Former Bobcat defensive back Akeem Davis of Laurel led the University of Memphis in tackles with 11 in the Tigers’ 47-3 loss at Arkansas State. Davis had six solos and five assists. Memphis, 0-2, hosts Austin Peay at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Liberty Bowl.
Ex-Bobcat defensive back Jamie Bender of Raleigh had three solos, six assists and one tackle for loss for Alabama-Birmingham in the Blazers’ 39-0 loss to Florida. Former Bobcat linebacker D.A. Autry of Mize had five solo stops for the Blazers.
UAB hosts Tulane at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Legion Field.
