Ex-Bobcat Davis leads Memphis in tackles vs. MSU; former Bobcat Walker leads Tulsa into Saturday's game vs. No. 1 Oklahoma

 Former Jones County Junior College standout Akeem Davis started in the secondary for the University of Memphis Tigers in Thursday’s 59-14 loss to Mississippi State University in the season opener at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn.

Davis, a junior from Laurel High School, had six solo tackles and one assist for the Tigers.

Memphis, 0-1, travels to Arkansas State for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 10.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Delta State University just came up short on a two-point conversion attempt with 10 seconds left and dropped a 24-23 decision to Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La.

Former Bobcat Robbie Mayers had five tackles for DSU and now has 11 tackles through two games. Mayers is also from Laurel High School. Other former Bobcats playing for the Statesmen include offensive linemen Evan Shaw of Oak Grove, Chase Sherman of D’Iberville and Darrell Leopold of Laurel; tight end Dewayne Hopson of Clarksdale; and defensive lineman Mario Owens of Collins.

Delta State travels to Fort Valley State (Ga.) at 6 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Several other ex-Bobcats will suit up on Saturday, Sept. 3, including defensive ends Tyrunn Walker, now with Tulsa University, and Ryan Robinson, who is at Oklahoma State.

Walker, a senior from New Iberia, La., will start for the Golden Hurricane as they travel to take on top-ranked Oklahoma at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on FX.

Robinson, a junior from Buford, Ga., is listed as a backup for the Cowboys as they host Louisiana-Lafayette at 6:10 p.m.  The game will air on okstate.com.
