Former Bobcats shine for Belhaven, Delta State

 ELLISVILLE – Several former Jones County Junior College Bobcats had big games in their senior college season openers on Saturday.

The Belhaven University Blazers opened the 2011 season with a 47-3 thrashing of Texas College at Newell Field in Jackson.

Ex-Bobcats Kylan Pollard, Rashad Wynes, Justin Gaines, Caleb McGruder, Josh Herring and Kewon Hunter are listed on the Belhaven roster.

Pollard, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound wide receiver from Laurel, had four receptions for 121 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown catch. Wynes, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound wide receiver from Macon, Ga., had four catches for 46 yards and scored on a 16-yard touchdown run. Gaines, a 5-foot-10, 197-pound running back from Bay Springs, rushed three times for 8 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards.

McGruder is a 6-foot-4, 325-pound offensive lineman from Enterprise, Herring is a 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive lineman from Bay Springs and Hunter is a 6-foot-2, 236-pound linebacker from Oak Grove.

Belhaven visits Louisiana College at 7 p.m. on Sept. 3.

Meanwhile, the Delta State University Statesmen began the season with a 28-21 overtime victory over Elizabeth City State University Saturday night at Cleveland’s Horace McCool Stadium.

Former Bobcats Evan Shaw, Chase Sherman, Darrell Leopold, Dewayne Hopson, Robbie Mayers and Mario Owens are members of the DSU team.

Shaw is a 6-foot-2, 275-pound offensive lineman from Oak Grove, Sherman is a 6-4, 285-pound offensive lineman from D’Iberville, Leopold is a 6-foot-3, 305-pound center from Laurel, Hopson is a 6-foot-3, 238-pound tight end from Clarksdale, Mayers is a 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive lineman from Laurel and Owens is a 6-foot-1, 290-pound defensive lineman from Collins.

The Statesmen visit Northwestern State at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
