ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Bobcats began preseason workouts with a 7 a.m. session on Tuesday at the Bobcat Practice Field.

Head coach Eddie Pierce welcomed 69 players to the first day of practice. The Bobcats must trim the roster to 55 players by the season opener on Sept. 1 against Mississippi Delta Community College.

Pierce, who begins his sixth year as head coach at JCJC, said the Bobcats have put in a great deal of work heading into this season.

“We had a great summer, I thought,” he said. “The kids worked very hard and we are in great physical shape going into the season. We are going to have to depend on some freshmen to step up and play early, especially in the offensive and defensive lines and at quarterback. But there again, they have had great summers and we feel good going into the season.

“We have a great attitude. I like this team. If the summer is any indication, I believe we are going to have a pretty good football team.”

JCJC will hold “Meet the Bobcats” at 6 p.m. on Aug. 30 at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.

The Bobcats will host Mississippi Delta at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 in the opening game.

The contest will be televised live on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman calling the play-by-play and Mark Easley providing commentary. The game will also air on WGDQ-FM, 93.1

Fans can also purchase season tickets for JCJC football and other sports by going to www.jcjc.edu or by calling the JCJC Alumni Foundation Office at 601-477-4049.
