Ex-Bobcat Toney to pitch for Austin Peay in Atlanta Regional

 ATLANTA, Ga. – A former Jones County Junior College pitching standout will take the field this weekend in the Atlanta Regional.

Zach Toney, who played for the Bobcats in 2009-10, is one of the top three starters for Austin Peay State University.

The D’Iberville High School product is 6-2 with a 3.44 earned average and one save. He has appeared in 17 games with 14 starts. Toney has allowed 83 hits in 72 2/3 innings with 67 strikeouts.

Austin Peay received an invitation to the NCAA Tournament on Monday as the champions of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. Austin Peay, 33-22, defeated Jacksonville State 7-3 on Saturday to claim the tourney championship. Toney was the winning pitcher in the game, going 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs and striking out four.

The Governors will face tournament host Georgia Tech and Atlantic Coast Conference representative Georgia Tech, 40-19, at 6 p.m. on Friday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Southern Miss, 39-17, of Conference USA will meet Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State, 34-23, at 2 p.m. on Friday. The winner of the regional will advance to a Super Regional the following week. Super Regional winners will head to the College World Series at Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Neb., beginning June 18.
