Bobcats rated No. 6 in latest poll

 ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Bobcats continue to climb the national rankings.

Head coach Christian Ostrander’s baseball team jumped up to No. 6 from No. 12 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, which was released Wednesday afternoon.

The 42-15 Bobcats made the move after beating defending national champion LSU-Eunice twice last Saturday to capture the Region 23 Tournament title.

That qualified them for a trip to the NJCAA Division II World Series, which begins Saturday in Enid, Okla., at David Allen Memorial Ballpark. JCJC will face fourth-ranked Des Moines Area Community College (Iowa) at 4 p.m. in a first-round matchup. The game will be audiocast on with Lance Pittman on the call. Airtime is 3:55 p.m.

DMACC owns a 46-16 record.

Heartland Community College (Ill.) tops this week’s poll with a 53-9 mark, followed by No. 2 University of Connecticut-Avery Point, who is 39-9. Those two teams meet at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

GateWay Community College (Ariz.) is third at 40-21 and they will meet 7th-ranked Madison College (Wisc.) at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Madison is 42-14. Western Oklahoma State College is 46-15 and rated No. 5. They meet 11th-rated Southeastern Community College (N.C.) at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Southeastern is 35-19.

Eighth-rated Cecil College (Md.) meets 14th-rated Kellogg Community College (Mich.) at noon on Saturday to conclude first-round games. Cecil College is 39-13-1 and Kellogg is 30-25.
