Riddell pitches No. 12 Bobcats into Region 23 title game

GOODMAN – The 12th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats will not go quietly.
The Bobcats got an excellent starting pitching performance from freshman Logan Riddell, four hits from Ladd Rhodes and defeated the Holmes Community College Bulldogs 11-5 here Friday evening at Charlie Donald Field in an elimination game of the Region 23 Tournament.
Riddell went eight innings, allowed two runs (one earned), seven hits, walked one and struck out eight as he upped his record to 10-4. The Kenner, La., product retired 16 of 18 Holmes’ batters at one point.
The Bobcats will face 2nd-ranked and defending national champion LSU-Eunice at 2 p.m. on Saturday. If the Bobcats win that game, then another game would follow 30 minutes later.
LSU-Eunice beat Holmes 10-6 in a winner’s bracket game and JCJC eliminated Northwest 6-0 in games played earlier in the day.
The winner of the regional heads to Enid, Okla., May 28-June 4 for the NJCAA Division II World Series.
Bobcats 11, Bulldogs 5
JCJC got started quickly in gaining some revenge against homestanding Holmes. The Bulldogs had beaten JCJC 5-4 on Thursday in a first round game.
Bobcat leadoff batter Zach Allen started the game by reaching on a two-base error by the leftfielder. Rhodes then reached on a bunt single and Vito Perna was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout, Darion Hamilton’s sacrifice fly to right scored Allen.
The Bobcats went up 3-0 in the second.
Ryan Roberts led off with an opposite field home run over the leftfield fence. Chad Guice followed with a single and was sacrificed to second by Graham Odom. After a popup, Rhodes singled and Perna followed with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the second when Tyji Hawkins, Jocobby Robinson and Jayson Keel got three straight singles with two outs to make it 3-1.
The Bobcats would score twice in the fifth without a hit.
Nick Ray and Chase Headrick each reached on errors. After Roberts was intentionally walked, a wild pitch scored Ray. Guice’s groundout scored Headrick to make it 5-1.
JCJC took a 6-1 lead in the sixth when Perna doubled and Ray drove him in with a single.
The Bobcats made it 9-1 in the eighth. Odom walked, Allen was hit by a pitch and Rhodes reached on his second bunt single of the game. Perna’s groundout scored a run and Hamilton’s single drove in two more.
The Bulldogs made it 9-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Keel reached on an error and later scored on Brandon Villarreal’s single.
JCJC scored two more runs in the top of the ninth. Roberts led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Jarrett Jenkins. Odom’s singled scored Jenkins and a Rhodes’ double would score Odom.
Holmes scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, getting a double from Caleb Kellum, singles from Hawkins and Liggins and taking advantage of a Bobcat error.
Waters replaced Riddell and pitched the ninth, giving up three hits and striking out two.
Rhodes singled three times and doubled, while Roberts homered and doubled for JCJC. Perna doubled and singled, while Allen, Ray, Hamilton, Guice and Odom each singled.
Chris Hutchinson started and took the loss. He went 5 2/3 innings, gave up six runs (three earned), eight hits, waked two and struck out two. Brandon Byars pitched 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief and struck out one. Bo Farmer went 1/3 of an inning, allowed three runs (all earned) on no hits and walked two. Jason Laxer went 1/3 of an inning and gave up a hit. Channing Sanders went the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits.
Villarreal and Hawkins each singled twice for the Bulldogs. Caleb Kellum doubled, while Keel, Liggins, Rafiel Johnson, Reggie O’Briant and Robinson added singles.
Holmes ends the season at 31-19.
