Bobcats tied for second after first round of national tennis tournament

PLANO, Texas – The Jones County Junior College Bobcats enjoyed an excellent opening day of the NJCAA Division I Tennis Tournament here Monday at Collin College.
JCJC posted 12 points, which ties them with six schools for second place in the nation. Cowley College (Kan.) is first with 16 points, while JCJC, Scottsdale College (Ariz.), New Mexico Military Institute, Temple College (Texas), Johnson County Community College (Kan.) and Seward County Community College (Kan.) are all tied for second place.
The Bobcats won five of their six singles matches during the opening round.
Nick Williams of Melbourne, Australia, defeated Rashun Jones of Moraine Valley College (Ill.), 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles, while Cade Sherman of West Jones beat Pete Danos of Moraine Valley, 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3 singles. Armand Deniakos of Laurel beat Cory Litke of Harford Community College (Md.), 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 in No. 4 singles and Laurel’s Josh Agee downed Garrett Lange of Harford, 6-4, 6-3 in No. 5 singles. Laurel Christian School’s Casper Wansley beat Blake Joiner of Marion Military Institute (Ala.), 6-2, 7-5 in No. 6 singles. Sam Thorold of Leicestershire, England, lost to Felipe Dos Santos of Moraine Valley, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles.
In doubles action, Williams and Deniakos drew a bye in No. 2 doubles. Sherman and Thorold beat Jordan Broadway and Henry Kruchko of Elmhurst College (Ill.), 6-1, 6-3, in No. 1 doubles, while Agee and Wansley lost to Kamphius and Peters, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3 in No. 3 doubles.
In Tuesday’s matches, Williams faces Matt Campbell and Sherman faces Antoine Raffaelli of Laredo College (Texas) at 9:15 a.m. Deniakos faces Jay Gillespie of Collin College and Agee meets Jose Zaatini of Vincennes College (Ind.) at 10:30 a.m. Wansley plays Jami Clark of Vincennes at 11:45 a.m. Thorold meets Alan Barrios of Pima College (Ariz.) at 3:30 p.m. in a No. 1 singles consolation match.
Sherman and Thorold face Admire Mushonga and Mbonis Ndimande of Seminole State (Okla.), while Williams and Deniakos meet Barios and Matt Bernard of Pima at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Agee and Wansley face Shane Allen and Nathaniel Shook of Glendale Community College (Ariz.) at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in a No. 3 doubles consolation match.
