ELLISVILLE – The tradition of excellence continues for the Jones County Junior College Bobcat cheerleaders.

The co-ed squad finished No. 3 in the nation and first in the state in the annual Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) national competition at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 15-17. It was the second straight year for the squad to place third.

“We did very well,” said head cheerleader coach Angela Clayton. “We start working in the fall on this right up until the competition. The cheerleaders give up their Christmas holidays and prepare until we leave for Disney World.”

The JCJC cheerleaders also performed at the Deep South Cheerleading event in Jackson and trained with the LSU squad in Baton Rouge to help prepare for nationals.

“We went to Baton Rouge and worked with Jason Galjour,” said Clayton. “He does the choreography for the LSU squad. He came up here in December and we went down there later to train.

“Jason cleaned up our routine because he was the one that actually put it together. He did a lot of motivational talking with our cheerleaders and really helped us to get better.”

Clayton, who is assisted by Brian Hunt, said this year’s squad performed up to the level of previous JCJC cheerleading teams.

“I am very proud of them,” she said. “I still want that No. 1 spot. Shelton (Community College of Alabama) came out on top and Wallace (Community College of Alabama) was behind them. They are always our main competitors.

“We did extremely well down there. I have a very talented team and I have enjoyed being with them this year.”

Clayton noted the team will lose some top sophomores, but she is pleased with the freshmen who will be returning. The squad will continue performing through basketball season, but they will not stop there.

“We pretty much are here year-round,” she said. “We will have tryouts in March and we will be in camps this summer. It never stops.”

Clayton said the official tryout date for the 2010-11 squad will be posted on the cheerleading page of the school’s website at www.jcjc.edu.

Members of the co-ed squad who participated in nationals are Pebbles Purvis of Collins, Brooke Mead and Taylor Coffman of Rochester, N.Y., Reghan Johnson and Presley Johnson of Mt. Olive, Erin Wood of Ellisville, Hannah Beth Byrd of Richton, Courtney Lloyd of McComb, Katelyn Gottberg of Gulfport, Whitney Page of Hattiesburg, Timothy Hallman of Hazlehurst, Caleb Jones, Aaron Gillett and John Hannah of Vancleave, Tyler Walley of Laurel, Jade Jones of Picayune, Curtis Wood of Pelahatchie, Devin Hodges of Petal and Patrick Sutton of New Hebron.
