Rangers outlast Holmes, 9-8, to reach MACJC title game

ELLISVILLE – The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers outlasted the Holmes Community College Bulldogs 9-8 here Saturday night in an elimination game of the MACJC State Baseball Tournament.
The Rangers will take on the 13th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Community Bank Park for the MACJC State Tournament championship. JCJC beat Holmes 6-1 in a winner’s bracket game earlier Saturday.
If Northwest beats the Bobcats in the first game, another game would follow at 6 p.m.
JCJC, Northwest and Holmes have all qualified for the Region 23 Tournament, which will be played Thursday through Saturday at Holmes. Gametimes and matchups will be released on Monday.
The Rangers are now 31-18, while Holmes falls to 30-17.
Rangers 9, Bulldogs 8
Northwest trailed 6-4 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but got back-to-back home runs from Jeremy Carlisle and Drew Klepzig to take the lead for good. Carlisle’s blast over the rightfield wall was a two-run shot that made it 6-6. Klepzig then greeted reliever Patrick Stewart with a drive over the leftfield wall to make it 7-6.
Northwest’s Austin Overall then led off the bottom of the sixth with another roundtripper to make it 8-6. Each team scored a run in the seventh to make it 9-7.
Holmes loaded the bases and scored a run in the eighth when Jared Rutland was hit by a pitch to force in Jayson Keel.
But the Rangers retired Josh Crowder on a flyball to rightfield and then Drew Griffin pitched a perfect ninth to notch the save.
The Rangers got home runs from Carlisle, Klepzig and Overall. Bradley Noland tripled and singled, while Griffin and Dex Herrington had two singles each. Dylan Castoria doubled, while Chad Wardlaw and Josh Johnson singled.
Marshall Hamrick pitched 4 2/3 innings of middle relief to post the victory. He gave up three runs (two earned), walked two and struck out five. Chris Casto was the starter, lasted 2 2/3 innings, gave up five earned runs, four hits and walked three. Griffin got the save and Jake Brigman also pitched.
Keel homered and singled three times for the Bulldogs. Brandon Villarreal hit his second home run of the day, while Josh Crowder tripled. Trennis Grant had a pair of singles and Rafiel Johnson doubled.
Stewart pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief and was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs and three hits. Chris Hutchinson started, went 4 1/3 innings, allowed six runs and struck out five. Caleb Kellum went the final 3 innings and gave one run, three hits, walked three and struck out four.
The game lasted 3 hours, 41 minutes.
