No. 13 Bobcats to play for state championship on Sunday

ELLISVILLE – The 13th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats are one win away from their first state baseball crown since 2002.
Vito Perna tossed a complete-game five-hitter with 10 strikeouts as JCJC whipped Holmes Community College, 6-1, here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park in a winner’s bracket game of the MACJC State Baseball Tournament.
JCJC improves to 37-14 on the season, while Holmes drops to 30-16.
The victory moves the Bobcats into Sunday afternoon’s 2 p.m. championship game against the winner of Saturday night’s Holmes/Northwest Mississippi Community College game.
The Holmes/Northwest winner must beat JCJC twice on Sunday to win the title.
The top three teams in the state tournament – JCJC, Holmes and Northwest – will compete in the Region 23 Tournament next Thursday through Saturday at Holmes. LSU-Eunice rounds out the Region 23 Tournament field.

Perna was excellent he improved to 9-1 on the season.
The only run he allowed was on a two-out home run by Brandon Villareal in the eighth inning.
JCJC took a 4-0 lead in the second inning when Darion Hamilton tripled and scored on Chase Headrick’s double. Ryan Roberts drew a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Jarrett Jenkins. After Graham Odom reached on a fielder’s choice, Headrick scored on a wild pitch. Zach Allen drew a walk and Ladd Rhodes followed with a two-run single to score Odom and Allen.
The Bobcats scored twice in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
Odom led off with a walk and Allen reached on a perfect bunt single. Rhodes then sacrificed, but reached on a throwing error, which allowed Odom to score. Perna then ripped an RBI single to score Allen.
Allen led the Bobcats at the plate with three singles, while Hamilton tripled and singled. Headrick doubled and singled, while Rhodes and Perna added singles.
Jermaine Liggins had three singles for Holmes and Jared Rutland also singled in addition to Villareal’s home run.
Taylor Burrell was the starter and loser for Holmes. He went 3-plus innings, allowed six runs (all earned), six hits, walked four and struck out two. Brandon Byars went the five innings, gave up no runs, three hits, struck out two and walked one.
