ELLISVILLE – Heavy rains, high winds and hail caused the 2011 MACJC State Baseball Tournament to be delayed here Friday at Community Bank Park.

But after two weather delays totaling right at five hours, one of the scheduled three games on Friday was completed.

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers beat the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs, 7-5, in an elimination game.

Northwest is now 30-18, while Gulf Coast ends the year at 23-22.

The winner’s bracket game between tournament host Jones County Junior College and Holmes Community College was postponed and will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The loser of that game will face Northwest at 6 p.m.

The tournament championship will be decided on Sunday. The title game will be played at 2 p.m. with an ‘if necessary’ game scheduled for 6 p.m.

The top three teams in the tournament – Jones, Holmes and Northwest – have qualified for the Region 23 Tournament next Thursday through Saturday at Holmes. LSU-Eunice rounds out the regional tournament field.

All games in the MACJC Tournament are being audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman on the play by play.

Rangers 7, Bulldogs 5

Northwest led 7-5 in the top of the ninth inning when the Bulldogs put the leadoff runner on base.

That’s when a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Jones County and play was stopped. A storm rolled through campus and play would be delayed for two hours and 55 minutes.

When play resumed, reliever Drew Griffin got a couple of fly balls and a strikeout to go with a walk he issued to pick up the save.

Dex Herrington had a bases-loaded triple during a two-out, five-run fifth inning rally and Drew Griffin went 4-for-4 as the Rangers rallied for the victory.

Tarus Hervey, 8-1, went five-plus innings and earned the victory. He allowed five earned runs, five hits, walked one and struck out six. Jeremy Massie pitched three hitless innings of relief, walking one and striking out two. Griffin pitched a hitless ninth and earned his third save of the year.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the second when Nick Boggs and Zach DeSoto singled and J.C. Cassidy doubled them home.

The Rangers cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth. Bradley Noland led off with a triple and scored on Herrington’s sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, Northwest had its decisive rally. Griffin led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Jimmy Braswell. After a flyout, Joseph Blair followed with an infield single and Chad Wardlaw was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Noland then walked to force in the tying run.

Herrington then drilled his bases-clearing triple to right-center to give Northwest a 5-2 lead. Jeremy Carlisle’s grounder to short was booted, allowing Herrington to score and make it 6-2.

The Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the sixth. Nick Purdy walked and Trey Porter was hit by a pitch. Daniel Miles then hit a deep drive off the leftfield wall for a triple to make it 6-4. Boggs then had a sacrifice fly to left to trim the lead to 6-5.

Northwest then got its final run in the bottom of the sixth when Griffin led off with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on Blair’s single to left.

Griffin had three singles and a double, while Herrington tripled and had four RBIs to pace the Rangers. Noland tripled and singled, while Blair had two singles.

Miles tripled and had two RBIs for Gulf Coast, while Cassidy doubled and drove in a pair of runs. Boggs, DeSoto and Hunter Frierson added singles.

Gavin Culpepper, 2-2, started and took the loss. He went five innings, allowed six runs (five earned), five hits, walked one and struck out two. Daniel Wineski pitched the final three innings, giving up a run and four hits.
