ELLISVILLE – The 14th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats did it the hard way, but they have advanced in the MACJC State Baseball Tournament.
The Bobcats fell in Game 2 to East Mississippi Community College 3-2 here Saturday afternoon at sun-splashed Community Bank Park, which evened the best-of-three series at 1-1.
But JCJC then bounced back to win the deciding Game 3, 10-4, to clinch the series. The Bobcats had won the opening game of the series on Friday, 13-0 in five innings.
That means the Bobcats will now host the four-team, double-elimination state tournament Thursday through Saturday. The matchups and times will be announced on Monday.
JCJC is now 35-14 on the season, while the Lions end the year at 17-29.
The competing teams in the state tournament will be JCJC, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Holmes and Northwest.
MGCCC swept Itawamba, while Holmes had to go three games to eliminate Pearl River and Northwest had to go three games to beat East Central.
The top three teams in the state tournament advance to the Region 23 Tournament on May 19-21.
