No. 14 Bobcats whip East Mississippi 13-0 in five innings

ELLISVILLE – The 14th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats continued their sizzling play here on a beautiful evening at Community Bank Park Friday night.

JCJC pounded out 15 hits, scored in every inning and whipped the East Mississippi Community College Lions 13-0 in five innings in Game 1 of their best-of-three MACJC opening round playoff series.

It was JCJC’s seventh straight victory and 19th in their last 23 games.

The Bobcats can clinch the series with a win in Game 2 at 2 p.m. on Saturday. A third game, if necessary, would follow 30 minutes after Game 2.

JCJC got a home run, double and a single from catcher Ryan Roberts and three singles and four RBIs from Vito Perna. Chad Guice doubled and singled, while Nick Ray singled twice. Darion Hamilton and Chase Headrick had doubles with Zach Allen, Ladd Rhodes and Graham Odom getting singles.

Starter Andrew Pierce improved his record to 9-1 by going all five innings. He gave up three hits, walked one and struck out eight.

JCJC got it started in the bottom of the first inning when Allen led off with a single, Rhodes reached on a bunt single and Perna followed with an RBI single.

The Bobcats sent nine men to the plate in the second inning and scored three runs.

Roberts led off with a double and was replaced by courtesy runner Jarrett Jenkins. With two outs, Allen was hit by a pitch and Rhodes drew a walk to load the bases.

Perna then delivered a two-run single to center and Ray followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.

The hit parade continued in the third when JCJC sent 10 batters to the plate, got five hits and scored five runs.

Headrick led of with a double and Roberts followed with an RBI single. Guice then singled and Odom had an RBI bunt single. EMCC committed a pair of errors on the play, which allowed Guice to also score. Allen drew a walk and Perna then delivered his third single in as many innings to score another run and give Jones a 9-0 lead.

The Bobcats scored four more runs in the fourth.

Roberts got it started with a towering home run to right-center, his fifth of the season. Guice doubled, Odom reached on an error and Allen drew a walk. The Lions then recorded a double play, but Perna was then hit by a pitch.

Ray followed with an RBI single and Hamilton then drilled a run-scoring double to left-center.

Mitch Bohon doubled for EMCC, while Tyler Aldridge and Ismael Reyes had singles. Cole Vaughn was the starter and loser for EMCC. He lasted 1 2/3 innings, gave up four earned runs, six hits, walked one and struck out one. Gabe Franks pitched 2/3 of an inning, gave up five earned runs, five hits and struck out two. Thomas Dorsey pitched 1 1/3 innings, gave up two earned runs, two hits and two walks. Wesley Dodd went the final 1/3 of an inning, gave up two earned runs, two hits and struck out one.

If the Bobcats win the series vs. EMCC, then they would host the four-team, double-elimination MACJC State Tournament May 12-14.

Saturday’s game will be audiocast on with an airtime of 1:55 p.m. Lance Pittman will be on the play-by-play.

In Friday’s other MACJC playoff games, the South teams were all winners.

Pearl River, the South No. 4 team, beat Holmes, the top-seeded North team, 5-3; Miss. Gulf Coast, the South No. 2 team, whipped Itawamba, the North No. 3 team, 10-2 in seven innings; and East Central, the South No. 3 team, downed Northwest, the North No. 2 team, 5-3 in 11 innings.
