Lady Bobcats head to Region 23 Tournament

ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College will continue its fastpitch softball season this week.

The Lady Bobcats will compete in the Region 23 Tournament at Traceway Park in Clinton. The six-team, double-elimination event takes place from Thursday through Saturday.

The top two teams in the tournament will advance to the NJCAA Division II Softball National Championship May 19-21 in Normal, Ill.

The Lady Bobcats are 33-13 and will take on Pearl River (21-21) at 4 p.m. on Thursday on Field 1. JCJC advanced to the MACJC State Tournament semifinals last week at Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The East Central Community College Lady Warriors, ranked 19th in the nation, ended up winning the state tournament, defeating 7th-ranked MGCCC 7-6 in eight innings in Friday night’s championship game.

The Region 23 Tournament gets under way with the opening ceremonies at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Two games will be played at 4 p.m. – the JCJC vs. Pearl River matchup, along with top-ranked LSU-Eunice (44-9) vs. East Mississippi (23-21) on Field 2. The JCJC/Pearl River winner meets East Central (32-11) at 6 p.m. Thursday, while the LSU-Eunice/East Mississippi winner faces Miss. Gulf Coast (34-11) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

East Central is seeded No. 1, while MGCCC is No. 2. LSU-Eunice is third, JCJC is fourth, Pearl River is fifth and East Mississippi is sixth.

All games involving JCJC will be audiostreamed on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman on the call. Airtime for the tournament opener between JCJC and Pearl River will be at 3:55 p.m. on Thursday.
