Givens signs with Alcorn State; Gilmore headed to Wyoming

ELLISVILLE – Two Jones County Junior College men’s basketball standouts have signed scholarships with senior colleges.

Forward Brandon Givens has signed with Alcorn State University, while Derrious Gilmore is headed to the University of Wyoming.

Givens is a 6-foot-6 sophomore from Ruffin, S.C. He was named to the All-Region 23 and All-MACJC South Division first teams. He was also the MVP of the MACJC All-Star game when he scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the South to a 98-89 victory over the North.

He was the leading scorer in the state and was the third-leading scorer in the nation with a 23.8 points per game average. He averaged 8.3 rebounds per game and shot 54.8 percent from the field. He was also 38-of-83 from 3-point range for 45.8 percent and shot 76.2 percent from the free throw line.

Givens scored 44 points to lead JCJC to a 90-86 upset of then-8th ranked Pearl River in Poplarville on Feb. 10. He was named the NJCAA Men’s Division I Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 12.

Givens played football and basketball at Colleton High School in Walterboro, S.C., and then attended and graduated from Princeton Day Academy in Baltimore, Md. He transferred to JCJC from College of Southern Idaho.

Givens is a part of the first recruiting class of new Alcorn State head coach Luther Riley.

Gilmore is a 5-foot-9 guard from Lake Clifton High School in Baltimore, Md. He played his freshman year at Pensacola Junior College (Fla.) before transferring to JCJC.

Gilmore was a second-team All-MACJC South Division choice and also scored 11 points in the MACJC All-Star game. He averaged 12.3 points, 6.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He was 46-of-103 from 3-point range for 44.7 percent.

Gilmore is a part of the first recruiting class for new Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt.
