ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College baseball standout Andrew Pierce has received national acclaim.
Pierce was named the NJCAA Division II National Pitcher of the Week for his effort for the week of April 18-24.
Pierce, a sophomore from Stringer, threw a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts in JCJC’s 3-0 victory at Southwest Mississippi on April 19. He had a no-hitter through five innings before giving up a leadoff single to start the sixth. That was the only Southwest baserunner in the game. Pierce recorded the final seven outs of the game by strikeout and struck out the side four times.
Pierce came back on April 22 to pitch the seventh inning vs. East Central, allow one hit, earn a save and preserve a 5-3 Bobcat win.
Pierce, a first-team NJCAA All-American in 2010, is currently 8-1 on the year with three saves. He has a 1.50 ERA and has 91 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched. He was walked only nine and has allowed just 49 hits.
The Southern Miss signee has helped the Bobcats to a 31-13 record and a No. 14 ranking in the latest NJCAA poll. Pierce has also helped the Bobcats earn two consecutive MACJC South Division titles.
The Bobcats end regular season play with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Hinds. The games will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman calling the play-by-play. Airtime is 1:55 p.m.
