Lady Bobcats to face Itawamba in state tournament

ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats will begin their quest for a state softball championship on Thursday.
The 17th-ranked Lady Bobcats, 32-12, are the No. 3 seed from the South Division and will face Itawamba, 28-17, the No. 2 seed from the North Division, at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round of the MACJC State Tournament. The event will be held at Ross Smith Field on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston.
The eight-team, single-elimination tournament begins at noon when East Central, 29-11, the No. 2 seed from the South, meets Northwest, 24-21, the No. 3 team from the North. At 2 p.m., Pearl River, 20-20, the No. 4 seed from the South, faces East Mississippi, 23-20, the top seed from the North. First round action concludes when tourney host and 10th-rated MGCCC, 32-10, plays Northeast, 24-21, the No. 4 team from the North at 6 p.m.
At noon on Friday, the JCJC/Itawamba winner faces the MGCCC/Northeast winner in a semifinal game, followed by the Pearl River/East Mississippi winner vs. the East Central/Northwest winner at 2 p.m. The two semifinal winners will play at 5 p.m. on Friday for the state championship.
All games involving the Lady Bobcats will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman on the call. Airtime for the Itawamba game will be 3:55 p.m.
All teams that win first-round games will qualify for the Region 23 Tournament May 5-7 at Traceway Park in Clinton.
Five teams from the state tournament, along with the nation’s top-ranked team, LSU-Eunice, will participate in the six-team, double-elimination regional tournament. The top two teams from the regional tournament will advance to the NJCAA Division II World Series May 18-21 in Normal, Ill.
It has been a record-setting year in fastpitch softball in many ways for second-year head coach Chris Robinson’s Lady Bobcats. They have set a school-record for victories, have qualified for the first-time ever for the state tournament and have achieved their first-ever national ranking.
