18th-ranked Bobcat men's tennis team qualifies for nationals

MERIDIAN –The 18th-ranked Jones County Junior College men’s tennis team has qualified for the NJCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Tournament May 15-20 in Plano, Texas.
JCJC tied for third place in the Region 23 Tournament here Wednesday. Host Meridian Community College finished first with 11 points and Itawamba Community College was second with 10 points. JCJC and Hinds Community College both had three points and tied for third, but the Bobcats earned the trip to nationals via the tiebreaker. The top three teams qualified for the trip to Texas.
In Wednesday’s finals, JCJC’s Nick Williams lost to top-seeded Simon Bardell of Meridian, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 2 singles. Bobcat Cade Sherman fell to top-seeded Andres Yepez of Meridian, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in No. 3 singles in a match that lasted three hours.
In No. 2 doubles, Williams and Armand Deniakos lost to MCC’s Yepez and Zach Marroy, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-0, in the finals.
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, JCJC’s Sam Thorold is ranked No. 49 nationally, while Williams is No. 51 and Sherman is No. 77.
In doubles, Thorold and Sherman are rated No. 38.
