It started off cool, breezy and overcast, but the sun eventually came out and shined on the 11th annual Jones County Junior College Alumni Foundation Golf Tournament.
“We are very excited about the tournament today,” said JCJC Alumni Coordinator Amie Herrington after play finished up Friday afternoon at the Laurel Country Club. “We came in early this morning with three slots left, we filled those up and we had a full field of 132 golfers.”
The tournament raises money for scholarships at JCJC. Herrington said the event benefits students in the eight-county, JCJC district.
“We will raise around $10,000 with this tournament and we will be able to fund two scholarships for JCJC sophomores in each of eight counties in our district,” she said. “We fund 16 scholarships and we think that is a great thing.”
The team of Joey Landrum, J.T. Jernigan and David Webb won the event with a 16-under par 56. Al Taylor, Vern Tew and David Hagan Jr. finished second in the first flight with a 57 and Herschel Bragg, Mike Morgan and T.K. Dunn posted a 59 to finish third.
Winning the scorecard playoff to top the second flight was Jonathan Strickler, Ray Palmer and Russell Howard with a 70. Chris Bryant, Randy Swan and Kurt Brautigam were second by a scorecard playoff with a 71, while Jim Kelly, Robert Sharp and Lacon Sheppard finished third with a 71.
In addition, a chance to win a $1 million annuity, sponsored by Magnolia Real Estate of Ellisville, by making a hole-in-one was drawn after the round of play.
Jernigan’s name was pulled out of the box and he headed to No. 9 to test his skill. He hit the ball the appropriate distance on the 220-yard shot, but it did not draw back to the green. The shot ended up pin high to the hole, but off to the right of the green.
Herrington was pleased with the turnout, noting that it’s more than just golf that brings people to the course.
“One reason for the popularity is because of the fellowship the players get to have with each other,” she said. “The food is a big draw. We feed them pancakes for breakfast and we serve ribeye sandwiches and all kinds of other food on the course during the round.”
Herrington credited JCJC Physical Plant Director Petey Barnett, the JCJC Alumni and Foundation office and numerous school officials with helping to make the tournament a success.
“We had a great time our here today,” she said. “Petey heads it up and makes it work. We also want to thank the Laurel Country Club and all of our corporate sponsors for helping to make it a success.
“We were thrilled to have another full field of 44 teams.”
