Pierce tosses one-hitter, strikes out 14 to lead JCJC past Bears, 3-0

SUMMIT – Andrew Pierce was almost perfect here Tuesday against Southwest Mississippi.
Pierce, a sophomore from Stringer, tossed a one-hitter and struck out 14 to lead the Jones County Junior College Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over the Bears in game one of a doubleheader.
SMCC bounced back to win game two, 6-2.
JCJC is now 27-13 overall and continues to lead the South Division with a 13-5 mark. The Bears are now 20-18 overall, 7-13 in league play.
The Bobcats return home to Community Bank Park for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. Southwest hosts Mississippi Delta at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Pierce was simply sensational, as he improved to 7-1.
He retired the last seven Bears by strikeout and struck out the side four times.
The Southern Miss signee had a no-hitter until Justin Crowell led off the sixth inning with a single. Crowell was the only Bear baserunner in the game, as Pierce did not walk a batter.
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chase Headrick tripled with two outs and scored on Ryan Roberts’ single.
The Bobcats added two more runs in the fifth. Headrick led off with a single and scored on a double to right-center by Roberts. Jarrett Jenkins entered as a pinch-runner and was sacrificed to third by Graham Odom. Zach Allen then singled Jenkins home.
Headrick tripled and singled twice for JCJC, while Roberts doubled and singled. Allen and Ladd Rhodes added singles.
Ryan Hickman took the loss for the Bears. He gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out one.
Bears 6, Bobcats 2
JCJC outhit Southwest, 6-5, but committed four errors to drop game two.
SMCC took a 1-0 lead in the first when leadoff batter Josh Bouldin was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on an error. He scored on a single by Kyle Wheeler.
Southwest went up 2-0 in the third. Austin Terrell drew a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Phillip Ingraffia. He was sacrificed to second by Chance Schmidt and would later score on an error.
The Bears scored three runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Daron McKigney singled, Cody Dillard walked and Johnny McKenzie followed with a run-scoring single. Alex Marshall’s single scored another run and Schmidt’s single drove in another run.
The Bobcats got on the board in the sixth when Rhodes led off with a bunt single. Vito Perna reached on a fielder’s choice and would score when Nick Ray doubled down the rightfield line.
The Bears got a run in the bottom of the sixth when McKenzie reached on an error, was sacrificed to second by Marshall, took third on a ground out and scored on another error.
JCJC scored in the seventh when Headrick singled and advanced to third on Odom’s double. He would score on an error.
Blake McIlwain, 3-4, started and took the loss. He went 3 1/3 innings, gave up two hits, four runs, walked three, hit one and struck out one. Logan Riddell pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed three hits and struck out one. Ryan Waters pitched an inning, did not allow a hit and struck out one. Josh Palmer pitched the final inning and did not allow a hit.
Ray doubled and singled for JCJC, while Odom and Darion Hamilton each doubled. Headrick and Rhodes added singles.
Trey Setzer went the distance and got the win. He gave up six hits, walked two and struck out five.
Wheeler, McKigney, McKenzie, Marshall and Schmidt had singles for the Bears.
