Lonergan tosses eight-inning shutout to pace Lady Bobcats

WESSON – Ginger Lonergan tossed an eight-inning shutout to lead the Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over Co-Lin Community College here Tuesday at Lady Wolves Field in game one of a twinbill.
Co-Lin bounced back to win game two, 7-2.
The Lady Bobcats are now 31-11 overall, 15-7 in the South Division. Co-Lin is 22-18 overall, 10-12 in league play.
The Lady Bobcats will play their final home game at noon on Friday against Pearl River Community College. It will be “Sophomore Day” at Community Bank Park. JCJC will participate in the MACJC State Tournament next week at Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Co-Lin concludes their season Thursday at home vs. Southwest Mississippi.

Lonergan gave up just four hits, struck out eight and walked four as JCJC gained the victory. She is now 16-3 on the year.
JCJC scored the winning run when Brittany Daniel started off the eighth inning on second base. She was sacrificed to third by Heidi Garcich and Haley Brooke Smith reached on a walk. Smith then stole second and Daniel scored when the throw down went off the second baseman’s glove into centerfield.
In the bottom of the eighth, Casey Smith started off the inning at second base and was sacrificed to third by Bethany Pinkston. Emily Smith drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Laken Lockhart then walked to load the bases.
Lonergan then retired Haley Sones on a popup to third and struck out Tammy Alford to end the game.
Co-Lin had threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Alford and Carrie Moak reached on singles to start the inning. They were sacrificed a base by Stevie Wright.
Ashley McCaffery then attempted a squeeze bunt, but was out of the box when she made contact and was declared out. Lady Bobcat catcher Jessmar Walters then caught Brooke DeLaugher’s foul pop up against the screen to end the inning.
Garcich, Alex Faciane and Walters each singled for the Lady Bobcats.
Bethany Pinkston took the tough-luck loss for Co-Lin. The Delta State signee gave up three hits, walked three and struck out 12.
Alford singled twice for Co-Lin, while Sones and Moak each singled.

Co-Lin sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning, got six hits and scored four runs.
Emily Smith singled, Lockhart doubled and Alford got an RBI single. Sones reached on a fielder’s choice and Wright delivered a two-run single. Brooke DeLaughter then singled in the fourth run.
JCJC rallied in the fourth.
Walters led off with a single and Kayla McDaniel reached on an error. K.T. Perkins then singled to load the bases and Stacia Whitaker followed with a two-run single.
At this point, Co-Lin brought in Pinkston to replace starter Sara Anthony with runners on second and third and nobody out. She got a strikeout and a pair of infield popups to end the threat.
Co-Lin added three runs in the sixth.
DeLaughter singled and was sacrificed to second by Anthony. Bobby Cochran was hit by a pitch and McCaffery delivered an RBI single. Lockhart drew a walk and Kerry Byrd reached on an infield single. Alford’s ground ball was booted, which allowed a run to score, and a single by Sones closed the scoring.
Lauren Candies, 15-8, went the distance and took the loss. She gave up 13 hits, walked one and struck out four.
Pinkston got the victory in relief. She pitched the final four innings, allowed just one hit, walked none and struck out three. Anthony started, went three innings, gave up seven hits and struck out one.
Lockhart double and singled for Co-Lin, while DeLaughter, Byrd and Alford each singled twice. Emily Smith, McCaffery, Sones, Wright and Anthony added singles.
