JCJC men in third place in Region 23 Tennis Tournament

 MERIDIAN – The Jones County Junior College men’s tennis team is in third place after one day of competition here Tuesday in the Region 23 Tennis Tournament.

Meridian leads the event with seven points, followed by Itawamba with six, JCJC with three and Hinds with two. The top three teams advance to the NJCAA nationals May 15-20 in Plano, Texas.

JCJC will be playing for three titles on Wednesday.

In No. 2 doubles, Nick Williams and Armand Deniakos beat Donnell Myles and Morgan Brashier of Hinds, 6-4, 6-3. They will face top-seeded Andres Yepez and Zach Marroy of Meridian at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Williams defeated Nikita Lisov of Hinds, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 2 singles. He faces No. 1 seed Simon Bardell of Meridian at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

JCJC’s Cade Sherman downed Itawamba’s Wesley Raines, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 3 singles. He faces top-seeded Andres Yepez for the title at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

In other action, JCJC’s Sam Thorold and Sherman lost to top-seeded Ethan Wilkinson and Leo Prudencio of Itawamba, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 1 doubles. In No. 3 doubles, JCJC’s Casper Wansley and Josh Agee fell to Trey Webb and Will Huntington of Meridian, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 3 doubles.

Thorold lost to Wilkinson, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 1 singles, while Deniakos fell to Marroy, 7-6 (4), 6-4, in No. 4 singles. Itawamba’s Luke Wilson beat Agee, 6-1, 6-0, in No. 5 singles and Wansley lost to Webb, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, in No. 6 singles.
