JCJC's Smith, Spiers conclude Region 23 Golf Tournament

AMORY – Jones County Junior College golfers Mitchell Smith and Braxton Spiers concluded play in the Region 23 Tournament here Tuesday at Riverbirch Golf Club.

Smith shot a 77 on Tuesday to go with his opening round 76 and finished at 153, which tied him for 13th place. Spiers matched his first round 78 with another 78 in round two to finish at 156 and tied for 16th.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jared Smith was the tournament medalist with a 72-72 –144. Four golfers tied for second, five shots off the pace. Austin Holt of Northeast Mississippi shot 78-71 – 149, along with East Mississippi’s Zachary Bailey at 75-74 – 149. Co-Lin’s Keaton Stamps and Bennett Ruschewski each shot 73-76 – 149.

MGCCC captured the team title for the fourth straight year. They shot 293-306 – 599, which was seven shots better than Northwest Mississippi. The Rangers posted a 294-312 – 606. Copiah-Lincoln was third at 304-310 – 614, East Mississippi finished fourth with a 314-308 – 622 and host Itawamba was fifth with a 330-330 – 660.

The Bulldogs will advance to the NJCAA nationals May 17-20 in Scottsdale, Ala., along with the top five individuals – Holt, Bailey, Stamps, Ruschewski and Northwest’s Cameron Thomas, who shot a 76-74 – 150.
