Bobcats take two from PRCC in "Catfight"

POPLARVILLE – Jones County Junior College continued to set the pace in the MACJC South Division with an impressive doubleheader sweep of rival Pearl River Community College here Wednesday evening at Wildcat Stadium.
In the opener, Darion Hamilton singled four times and drove in four runs and Andrew Pierce retired the final 10 batters of the game as the Bobcats posted an 11-2 victory.
In game two, Blake McIlwain pitched the Bobcats into the fifth inning and Hamilton added two more singles as the Bobcats triumphed, 6-3, to sweep the “Catfight.”
JCJC, who received votes in the latest NJCAA poll, improves to 25-11 overall and sits atop the division at 12-4. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is second at 9-5.
Pearl River drops to 21-13 overall, 7-7 in league play.
The Bobcats will step out of division competition with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Itawamba Community College. The next division games for JCJC will be Tuesday at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Pearl River hosts Southwest at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Bobcats 11, Wildcats 2
Pearl River scored a run in the top of the first when James Abraham walked and B.J. Smith drove him in with a single.
JCJC made it 1-1 in the second when Vito Perna led off with a double, went to third on Hamilton’s groundout and scored when Ryan Roberts reached on an error.
The Bobcats went up 4-1 in the third. Chad Guice reached on a walk and Rhodes reached on a bunt single. Nick Ray’s two-run single to right-center scored Guice and Rhodes. Hamilton then scored Ray with a single to center.
The Wildcats made it 4-2 in the bottom of the third. Abraham singled, stole second and scored on Smith’s single to right.
The Bobcats made it 7-2 in the sixth. Graham Odom reached on an error to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Zach Allen. Rhodes and Guice walked to load the bases and Ray then walked to force in a run. After a strikeout, Hamilton came through with a two-run single.
JCJC then added four runs in the seventh.
Roberts led off with a walk and Odom singled. Allen then had a run-scoring single and Guice reached on an infield single. Perna then had a two-run single and Hamilton ended the scoring with another run-scoring single.
Pierce, 6-1, went the distance, allowed two earned runs, five hits, walked one and struck out five.
Hamilton had the four singles for the Bobcats, while Perna had a double and two singles. Rhodes, Guice, Ray, Roberts, Odom and Allen added singles.
Taylor Byrd, 4-3, started and took the loss. He went 5 1/3 innings, gave up six runs (three earned), seven hits, three walks and struck out three. Josh Hubbell and Buck Bernard each faced a batter and issued a walk. Hunter Curtis went the final 1 2/3 innings, allowed four earned runs, six hits, walked one and struck out two.
Smith singled twice for the Wildcats, while Aaron Lee doubled. Abraham and Derek Sanders added singles.
Bobcats 6, Wildcats 3
The Bobcats never trailed as they completed taking two from the hosts.
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the second when Chase Headrick singled, Odom singled and Allen doubled to right to score Headrick.
The Bobcats made it 2-0 in the fourth. With nobody on and two outs, Rhodes drew a walk, stole second and scored on Guice’s single.
JCJC took a 3-0 lead in the fifth when Ray led off with a single, Perna reached on an error, Headrick was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Roberts drove in the run with a fielder’s choice.
Meanwhile, McIlwain had the Wildcats shut out until the bottom of the fifth.
That’s when Jordan Williams led off with a double and Chase Lewallen followed with a walk. Ryan Waters would enter in relief of McIlwain at this point. After a flyout, Smith singled to load the bases. Abraham’s infield single scored a run and Lewallen came home on an error. But Waters got a fielder’s choice for the second out and Ray made an unassisted putout at first base on a hot shot by Sanders to end the inning.
The Bobcats then had another, nobody on/two-out rally in the sixth.
This time, Guice drew a walk and Ray followed with a single. Perna singled to center to score Guice and Hamilton reached on an infield single to score another run to give the Bobcats a 5-2 lead.
They made it 6-2 in the seventh when Odom led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Allen and scored on a single by Rhodes.
But the Wildcats made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh.
Matthew Magee led off by reaching on an error. One out later, Abraham singled and Grae Orman reached on an error to load the bases.
Perna then entered in relief of Waters. Sanders greeted Perna with an RBI single to center to make it 6-3. But Perna retired Lee on a fielder’s choice and struck out Chase Toussaint to end the game.
McIlwain, 3-3, went four-plus innings, gave up two runs, four hits, walked four and struck out four to earn the victory. Waters went 2 1/3 innings, allowed an unearned run, four hits and struck out one. Perna went 2/3 of an inning, allowed one hit and got his first save of the year.
Ray, Perna, Hamilton and Headrick had two singles each for Jones. Allen had a double, with Rhodes, Odom and Guice adding singles.
Robert Marzoni started, went five innings and took the loss to fall to 6-2. He gave up three runs (two earned), seven hits, walked three and struck out two. Hubbell pitched 2/3 of an inning, gave up four hits and walked one. Bernard went 1/3 of an inning and struck out one. Mike Peters pitched the final inning, allowed one hit, one run and one walk.
Williams doubled and singled for PRCC, while Abraham and Sanders each singled twice. Smith, Lee and Toussaint added singles.
