ELLISVILLE – It was a record-setting afternoon here Tuesday on a gorgeous day at Community Bank Park.
The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats set a school-record for victories (27) when they scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to post a 4-3 win over Southwest Mississippi Community College.
They quickly set another record for wins with a 1-0 victory in game two.
The sweep gives the Lady Bobcats a 28-10 overall record, 12-6 in the South Division. That puts them in second place, ½ game better than 11-6 East Central. Mississippi Gulf Coast tops the league with a 16-3 mark.
Southwest falls to 14-18 overall and 6-12 in the league.
JCJC continues division play at noon on Saturday at Hinds Community College. The doubleheader will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman calling the play-by-play.
The Lady Bears host Miss. Gulf Coast at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Southwest trailed 3-0, but scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to tie it up at 3-3.
But then an interesting bottom of the seventh occurred
Kayla McDaniel led off the inning with a single and Jasmine Jefferson replaced her as a pinch-runner. Mallory Cowart then reached on a single that squirted into shallow rightfield. Jefferson advanced to third and Cowart took second on the throw.
Haley Brooke Smith then flied out to shallow rightfield. Jefferson came halfway home, but stopped. The throw then sailed over catcher Erin Stuckey’s head and bounced several feet away.
Jefferson did not initially advance, but then came to home plate after the ball rolled away. SMCC then fielded the ball, but the throw to the catcher was dropped and Jefferson scored the winning run.
JCJC scored first in the third when McDaniel drilled a one-out double off the leftfield wall and scored on Cowart’s single to right.
The Lady Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Shannon Mosley singled and Stacia Whitaker was hit by a pitch. Jessmar Walters sacrificed the runners. Mosley was then injured diving back into the third base bag on a pickoff throw. Brittany Daniel entered in her place and scored on Heidi Garcich’s sacrifice fly to left.
JCJC made it 3-0 in the fifth when Cowart blooped a double over the third baseman’s head, down the leftfield line. She was sacrificed to third by Smith and scored on a perfectly executed squeeze by Alex Faciane.
Meanwhile, Ginger Lonergan was dominating in the circle for Jones. She retired 15 of the first 16 batters she faced and had a no-hitter through five innings.
But Aseye Attipoe led off the sixth with a bloop infield single that went about 15 feet from home plate. Shelbi Conerly then reached on a bunt single and the runners were sacrificed by Hali Sasser.
Brooke Szigeti then bunted the ball and the Lady Bobcats would not make the play. Attipoe scored on the initial error and another error would allow Conerly to score and Szigeti to advance to third with just one out.
Lindsay Clark then hit a fly ball to rightfield that McDaniel caught. She then threw Szigeti out at home plate for the double play.
The Lady Bears tied it in the seventh. Tipheri Grimes led off with a double and Stuckey grounded out to send Grimes to third. Whitney Moore’s sacrifice fly to center scored Grimes.
Lonergan, 14-3, posted the victory. She allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out nine.
Cowart singled twice and doubled for JCJC, while McDaniel doubled and singled. Mosley and Garcich added singles.
Ashlyn Grisaffe went the distance and took the loss for SMCC. She allowed seven hits, struck out five, walked none and hit one.
Grimes doubled for the Lady Bears, while Attipoe and Conerly added singles.
Lady Bobcats 1, Lady Bears 0
Lauren Candies posted her second, three-hit, 1-0 victory over Southwest this season. She did the same thing on March 11 at Summit.
In this game, Candies walked none and struck out seven, as she upped her record to 14-7. She retired the final 12 batters in a row and 15 of the final 16.
JCJC scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Coward led off with a double, advanced to third on Smith’s groundout and scored on Faciane’s sacrifice fly to right.
Cowart doubled and singled for the Lady Bobcats. She was 5-for-6 on the day and also reached base by being hit by a pitch. Smith and Faciane had singles.
Moore took the loss. She gave up four hits, walked two and struck out four.
Sasser, Stuckey and Conerly had singles for SMCC.
