JCJC's Spiers finishes eighth in MACJC State Golf Tournament

CANTON – Jones County Junior College’s Braxton Spiers finished tied for eighth in the MACJC State Golf Tournament here Tuesday at the Deerfield Golf Course at Colonial Country Club.

Spiers, a freshman from Pearl River Central, shot a 77 in the second round to go with his opening round 76 for a total of 153.

Spiers and teammate Mitchell Smith each qualified as individuals for next week’s Region 23 Tournament at Riverbirch Country Club in Amory. Smith, a sophomore from Simpson Academy, shot a 76 on Tuesday to go with his 81 on Monday for a total of 157.

As a team, the Bobcats finished fifth in the tournament. They posted a 323 on Tuesday to go with their opening round of 314 for a 637.

Other individual scores for JCJC were: West Jones freshman Ryan Blackwell with a 79-86 – 165; Prentiss Christian freshman Logan Parish with a 78-88 – 166; and Northeast Jones freshman Markas Holifield with an 84-84 – 168.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Drew Seals was the tournament medalist. He posted the event’s best round with a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday. He had a first-round score of 75, giving him a two-day total of 144, even-par.

That was five shots better than his Bulldog teammate, Jared Smith. Smith fired a 76-73 – 149. There was a three-way tie for third between East Mississippi’s Andrew Speirs (80-70 – 150) and Weston Wallace (76-74 – 150), along with East Central’s Luke Brown (76-74 – 150).

Mississippi Gulf Coast won the event with a 305-297 – 602, beating runnerup East Mississippi by nine shots. EMCC shot a 313-298 – 611. Northwest Mississippi Community College was third with a 307-310 – 617, while Co-Lin Community College was fourth with a 312-312 – 624.

The top four teams, plus tournament host Itawamba Community College, qualify for the Region 23 Tournament. The top five individuals not on any of the top four teams qualify for the regional.
