Lady Bobcat netters down Central Alabama; JCJC teams swept by Meridian

 MERIDIAN – The Jones County Junior College women’s tennis team edged Central Alabama Community College, 5-4, here Saturday morning.

Both the Bobcat men and women’s teams were then blanked by Meridian Community College, 9-0.

The Lady Bobcats are now 9-4 on the year, while the men’s team is 9-3.

The JCJC tennis teams end regular season play at noon on Monday in Biloxi against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

They will then participate in the MACJC State Tournament Thursday through Saturday on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton.

Lady Bobcats 5, Central Alabama 4

JCJC won two of the doubles’ points and split the six singles’ matches to notch the victory.

In No. 2 doubles, JCJC’s Arlette Cochran and Brandy Freeman beat Katie Smalley and Whitney Corgill, 8-4, and Lauren Carpenter and Amber Long claimed No. 3 doubles by default. Central Alabama’s Lauren Blair and Laine Denuex beat Rachel Jefcoat and Alison Rudolph, 8-2, in No. 1 doubles.

Cochran beat Denuex, 6-3, 7-5, in No. 2 singles; Rudolph defeated Amber Gurubel, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 4 singles; and Long won No. 6 singles by default.

Blair defeated Jefcoat, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 singles; Smalley downed Freeman, 6-1, 6-0, in No. 3 singles; and Corgill edged Carpenter, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9, in No. 5 singles.

Lady Eagles 9, Lady Bobcats 0

MCC’s Savannah Zachry and Indi Mire beat Jefcoat and Rudolph, 8-2, in No. 1 doubles. Monica Rekkedal and Shelley Munn downed Cochran and Freeman, 8-3, in No. 2 doubles and Kaley Allen and Cecilly Monsour took No. 3 doubles over Carpenter and Long, 8-5.

Rekkedal beat Jefcoat, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 singles; Zachry downed Cochran, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 2 singles; and Mire edged Freeman, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in No. 3 singles. Allen defeated Rudolph, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 4 singles; Munn beat Carpenter, 6-1, 6-0, in No. 5 singles; and Monsour defeated Long, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 6 singles.

Eagles 9, Bobcats 0

MCC’s Matic Leskovar and Simon Bardell beat Sam Thorold and Cade Sherman, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles; Andres Yepez and Zach Marroy defeated Nick Williams and Armand Deniakos, 8-5, in No. 2 doubles; and Will Huntington and Trey Webb downed Casper Wansley and Josh Agee, 8-4, in No. 3 doubles.

Leskovar beat Thorold, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 1 singles; Bardell defeated Williams, 6-2, 6-0, in No. 2 singles; and Yepez beat Sherman, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 3 singles. Deniakos lost a heartbreaker to Marroy in No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4. Huntington defeated Agee, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 5 singles and Webb beat Wansley, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 6 singles.
