Pierce throws one-hitter as JCJC splits with Hinds

ELLISVILLE – Andrew Pierce threw a one-hitter and Vito Perna belted his team-leading fifth home run to help the Jones County Junior College Bobcats blank the Hinds Community College Eagles, 10-0 in six innings in game one of a doubleheader here Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.

It was a reversal of fortune in the nightcap, as the Eagles whipped the Bobcats, 11-1 in six innings.

JCJC is now 21-11 overall and 8-4 in South Division play. Hinds is 17-13 overall and 3-9 in the league.

The Bobcats begin the second half of league play with a 2 p.m. home doubleheader on Saturday against Co-Lin Community College. The games will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with a 1:55 p.m. airtime. Lance Pittman will be handling play-by-play.

Hinds travels to Southwest for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

Bobcats 10, Eagles 0

Pierce gave up a one-out single to Pierson Waring in the second inning, but that was the only baserunner for Hinds. Pierced faced 19 batters – one over the minimum for a six-inning game.

The Stringer sophomore did not walk a batter and struck out 10, as he upped his record to 5-1. He threw 78 pitches – 54 for strikes.

Pierce now has a 1.67 earned run average through Tuesday’s game. He has 66 strikeouts and just six walks in 54 innings pitched.

Perna’s blast got the Bobcats on the board in the third inning. Chad Guice singled and Nick Ray followed with another single.

Perna then launched his home run over the left-center field wall. He later had an RBI single to give him four RBIs in the game and a team-leading 33 for the season. He also tops the team with a .390 batting average.

The Bobcats added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and scored five runs in the sixth to clinch the game.

Perna also singled twice in addition hitting a home run. Ryan Roberts and Darion Hamilton each doubled and singled, with Roberts driving in two runs. Chase Headrick had a pair of singles with Ladd Rhodes getting a triple. Chad Guice and Ray added singles.

Tyler Akins started and took the loss for Hinds. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed seven runs (six earned), nine hits, walked two and struck out one. Matt Anthony faced five batters and did not retire a Bobcat. He gave up three runs (two earned) and three hits.

Eagles 11, Bobcats 1

Hinds scored three runs in the second and the Bobcats scored once in the bottom of the second. But the Eagles would add one in the third, four in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth.

JCJC got its only run when Roberts was hit by a pitch, Graham Odom singled and Zach Allen followed with an RBI single.

JCJC was charged with five errors in the game after the Eagles committed five errors in the opener.

Allen singled twice to lead the Bobcats, while Rhodes, Headrick and Odom each had a single.

Blake McIlwain , 2-3, was the starter and loser. He went 2 2/3 innings, allowed four runs (one earned), five hits, walked one and struck out one. Josh Palmer tossed 2/3 of an inning, gave up two earned runs, two hits, walked two and struck out one. Ryan Waters faced four Eagles and did not retire a batter. He gave up four earned runs on four hits. Chase Stewart went 1 2/3 innings, gave up one earned run, walked two and struck out two. Cameron Rose pitched an inning, giving up one earned run on two hits.

Alex Gunn went the distance and got the victory. He allowed one earned run, five hits, walked none and struck out four.

Adam Thigpen homered and singled for Hinds, while Ethan Bright and Morgan Grant each doubled and singled. Daniel Gilbert had two singles, while Akins doubled. Waring, Ryno Martinez, Trey Prentiss and Sean Weaver added singles.
