Lady Bobcats tie season record for victories

ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College softball team achieved a record here Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.

The Lady Bobcats defeated East Central Community College, 5-1, in game one, but fell 6-4 in eight innings in game two.

The split gives JCJC a 26-8 overall record, which ties a school record for victories for fast-pitch softball. The Lady Bobcats are 10-6 in South Division play.

East Central is now 23-9 overall and 10-5 in the division. They have to makeup a rained out game with division-leading Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

The Lady Bobcats face a tough assignment on Saturday when they travel to take on the nation’s top-ranked team – LSU-Eunice – in a noon doubleheader. They resume division play at home with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on April 12 vs. Southwest Mississippi Community College. That twinbill will have an audiocast on with Lance Pittman on the call. Airtime is 2:55 p.m.

East Central has an important home doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Friday against the top team in the division, MGCCC.

Ginger Lonergan was solid again in the circle for JCJC.

She went the distance, scattered 11 hits, walked none, struck out five and gave up an earned run as she improved her record to 13-2.

JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the third when Shannon Mosley walked, stole second and ended up scoring on a pair of ECCC throwing errors.

The Lady Bobcats went up 2-0 in the fourth when Heidi Garcich led off with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third by K.T. Perkins and scored on a bunt single by Kayla McDaniel.

JCJC added two more runs in the fourth. Mosley singled and scored on Stacia Whitaker’s triple. Jade McLeod’s double drove in Whitaker.

In the sixth, Mallory Cowart had a one-out triple and scored on Haley Brooke Smith’s single.

The Lady Warriors avoided the shutout when they had four consecutive singles in the seventh. A hit by Lauren Nicholas scored Kelsi Walton.

Whitaker tripled, doubled and singled, while Smith and Garcich each singled twice for the Lady Bobcats. Cowart had a triple, McLeod had a double with Alex Faciane, Mosley and McDaniel getting singles.

Nicholas, Kasie Buckley and Chelsea Jones had two singles each for ECCC. Haylee Roberts had a double, while Abbie Joiner, Summer Alexander, Taylor Bailey and Watson had singles.

Bailey took the loss. She pitched six innings, allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out three.

The Lady Bobcats tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, but ECCC scored three runs in the top of the eighth to gain the split.

JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the second when Mosley singled, went to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Garcich.

ECCC tied it in the third. Jones reached on a bunt single and would later score on an infield single by Alexander.

The Lady Warriors took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Roberts singled, was sacrificed to second by Watson and would score on an error.

JCJC tied it in the bottom of the fourth. Mosley led off with a double to the wall in left and would eventually score on a wild pitch.

ECCC went up 3-2 in the fifth when Alexander tripled down the rightfield line and scored on a double by Brittany Pounders.

The Lady Bobcats tied it in the seventh when Jessmar Walters led off with a single and was replaced by courtesy runner Megan Cook. Cook was sacrificed to third by Garcich and a hard shot hit by Perkins went off the glove of the third baseman for a run-producing double to make it 3-3.

In the eighth, Pounders was on second when Bailey singled. Courtesy runner Laurel Burnett stole second and Watson drilled a two-run double to right-center. Joiner’s single would score Watson.

JCJC had a chance in the bottom of the eighth. Cowart was on second and Faciane singled with one out. Mosley’s fourth hit of the game scored Cowart and put runners on first and second. But ECCC would turn a 1-5-3 double play to end the game.

Lauren Candies, 13-6, went the distance and took the loss. She gave up 14 hits, walked one and struck out five.

Mosley had three singles and a double, while Perkins doubled and singled. Brittany Daniel, Walters and Faciane added singles.

Bailey posted the victory. She gave up nine hits, walked none and struck out three.

Alexander tripled and singled twice for ECCC, while Pounders and Watson each doubled and singled. Joiner and Nicholas each had two singles, while Jones, Roberts and Bailey had one single each.
