ELLISVILLE – The honors continue to roll in for Jones County Junior College basketball standout Tanecka Carey.

On Tuesday, Carey was named an NJCAA first-team All-American. Carey is a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard from Jackson Murrah.

Carey helped head coach Sandra Sumrall’s Lady Bobcats to a state championship in 2010 as a freshman. The Lady Bobcats finished second in the MACJC South Division and in the state tournament to eventual Region 23 champion Co-Lin Community College in 2011. JCJC made appearances in the regional tournament in both of Carey’s seasons.

Carey was named to the All-MACJC, All-Region 23 and All-Region 23 Tournament teams this year, as the Lady Bobcats went 19-8. She was also an All-MACJC and All-Region 23 performer as a freshman when JCJC posted a 22-6 record.

This past season, Carey led the state and was second in the nation in scoring with a 24.9 points per game average.  She averaged 8.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game.

Carey shot 51.6 percent from the field and made 95-of-185 3-point shots for 51.3 percent. She shot 79.2 percent from the free throw line.

She scored a school-record 53 points in the Lady Bobcats’ 90-80 upset of eventual state and regional champion Co-Lin on Feb. 17 at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

Carey, who has signed with the University of Southern Mississippi, was named the NJCAA Women’s Division I Player of the Week on two occasions this past year – the weeks of Jan. 15 and Feb. 19.

Co-Lin’s Kiara Etienne was a second-team All-American selection, while Norianna Haynes of Meridian Community College was an Honorable Mention All-American selection.
