Bobcats tie for sixth in EMCC Invitational

 STARKVILLE – Jones County Junior College finished in a tie for sixth place in the East Mississippi Community College Invitational, which concluded play here Monday at the Mississippi State University Golf Course.

The Bobcats improved 11 shots in Monday’s second round, posting a 321 to go with their first-round 332 for a total of 653, which tied them with Itawamba Community College.

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers won the tournament, shooting a 311-295 – 606. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College finished second with a 315-296 – 611, edging the host Lions, who posted a 315-297 – 612.

Individually, JCJC’s Ryan Blackwell shot a 75 on Monday to go with his opening round of 77 for a 152, which tied him for seventh place. Bobcat Mitchell Smith shot a 76 on Monday to go with his Sunday round of 80 to give him a two-day score of 156.

JCJC’s Markas Holifield shot 85-82 – 167, while Logan Parish shot an 81-86 – 167. JCJC’s Braxton Spiers had an 86-82 – 168; Bing Waldron posted a 90-81 – 171; and Jared Hodge fired a 90-89 – 179. Blackwell and Hodge played as individuals for the Bobcats.

East Mississippi’s Weston Wallace was the tournament medalist, shooting a 2-under par 69 on Monday. He had a 77 on Sunday, giving him a two-day total of 146, 4-over par. That was two strokes better than MGCCC’s Jared Smith and Co-Lin Community College’s Berry Givens. Smith shot 74-74 – 148, while Givens shot 75-73 – 148.

The teams will compete in the MACJC State Tournament April 11-12 at Deerfield Country Club in Jackson. The Region 23 Tournament will be held April 18-19 at Riverbirch Country Club in Amory.
