Bobcats still tied for first place after split at Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON - Jones County Junior College entered Saturday's doubleheader tied with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for the South Division lead.
The two teams still share first place after splitting the twinbill here at Ken “Curly” Farris Field.
The Bobcats smashed three home runs in the opener and got a complete-game pitching performance from Vito Perna to post a 10-1 victory. In game two, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the fifth inning to rally from a 2-1 deficit and beat the Bobcats, 3-2.
JCJC catcher Ryan Roberts had a tremendous day at the plate. He went 6-for-6 with two home runs. He has three home runs in his last four games, which gives him four on the season.
JCJC is now 20-10 overall, 7-3 in the division. Gulf Coast is 14-14 overall, 7-3 in league play.
The Bobcats return home to host Hinds Community College in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday. The second game will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with an airtime of approximately 6 p.m. Lance Pittman will call the play-by-play.
Gulf Coast hosts Southwest at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Bobcats 10, Bulldogs 1
JCJC used a seven-run first inning to take command against the Bulldogs.
Chad Guice and Nick Ray walked and Perna followed with a three-run home run to left. Darion Hamilton then reached on an error, Chase Headrick walked and Roberts singled a run home.
Shortstop Graham Odom followed with another three-run homer well over the leftfield wall to make it 7-0.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth when Michael Paul led off the
inning with a home run.
Roberts led off the fifth with a single. Zach Allen was hit by a pitch, Guice reached an error and a wild pitch would score a run to make it 8-1.
In the sixth, Headrick singled and Roberts followed with a two-run home run to close the scoring.
Perna, 5-0, allowed one run, five hits, walked one and struck out six to get the win.
Roberts had three singles and a home run, while Allen singled twice. Odom and Perna each homered, while Guice, Hamilton and Headrick singled.
Paul homered and singled for the Bulldogs, while Hunter Freeman, Daniel Miles and Nick Boggs singled.
Trey Porter started and took the loss. He only lasted 1/3 of an inning, allowed seven runs (six earned), four hits and walked three. Tyler Bray went four innings, gave up an unearned run, four hits, walked one and fanned seven. Matt Lee lasted 1 1/3 innings, gave up two earned runs, two hits and struck out one. Daniel Wineski went the final inning, giving up a hit and a walk.
Bulldogs 3, Bobcats 2
JCJC scored its only two runs in the third inning when Headrick singled and Roberts followed with his second home run of the day. That made it 2-0.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the third when Hunter Frierson walked, Paul singled and Nick Purdy scored the run with a groundout.
Gulf Coast's winning rally came with two outs in the fifth. Purdy and Porter singled and Miles' single scored Purdy to tie the game at 2-2. Zach DeSoto then singled to score Porter.
Logan Riddell, 4-4, went 5 1/3 innings and took the loss. He gave up three earned runs, eight hits, struck out two and walked three. Ryan Waters went the final 2/3 of an inning and got a strikeout.
Roberts homered and singled to lead the Bobcats, while Guice singled twice. Perna, Hamilton, Headrick and Odom added singles.
Purdy was the starter for the Bulldogs. He went four innings, gave up two runs, five hits, walked two and struck out three. Timothy Maloney pitched
an inning in relief and got the win. He gave up one hit and got a strikeout. Tyler Buckley pitched an inning and allowed a hit. Anthony Izzio pitched the seventh inning and got a save. He allowed one hit and got a strikeout.
Porter and DeSoto each singled twice for Gulf Coast. Boggs had a double, while Paul, Purdy and Miles added singles.
