The first day of April proved to be a perfect day for golf in Laurel.
And 132 people took advantage of the sunny skies and pleasant temperatures to participate in the 12th annual Jones County Junior College Alumni Foundation Golf Tournament at historic Laurel Country Club.
“We had a great tournament,” said JCJC Alumni Coordinator Amie McQueen after Friday’s event. “We had a large field, 41 sponsors, one social sponsor and over 50 door prizes donated from our local area. Without our sponsors, we would not be able to continue this and give scholarships to students in our eight-county district.
“With the help of our sponsors, we hope to continue the success we have had with this tournament.”
The tournament title was decided by a scorecard playoff, with the team of Allen Hodo, Ernie Joiner and Brian Clark coming out on top. They shot a 16-under par 56, as did the team of David Webb, J.T. Jernigan and Joey Landrum. The team of Junior Bragg, Mike Morgan and Michael Milner finished third with a 57.
Claiming the second flight was the trio of JCJC athletic director Katie Herrington, JCJC Sports Hall of Famer and former Laurel High School football great Aubrey Wade and Shawn Wansley with a 71. Jim Clark, Mike Sanford and Joe Howell finished second with a 72, edging the third-place team of David McLaurin, Chad McLaurin and Del Crum and the trio of Brett Livingston, Lewis Holifield and Lee Boyette, who shot 72.
The tournament serves a splendid purpose. The money raised provides scholarships to students in the school’s district.
“We raise over $10,000 with this tournament, we give that money to the JCJC Foundation and that provides one full tuition scholarship to each of the counties in our district,” McQueen said. “It is a wonderful event that benefits students.”
The tournament is also noted for on-course food items, such as ribeye sandwiches, sausage dogs and shrimp-on-a-stick. This year, a fajita station was added and it proved to be a busy stop along the course.
“The fajita station was very popular,” said McQueen. “We heard a lot of compliments about the fajitas. Of course, we do pancakes and sausage early in the morning before the tournament starts and those are quite popular, too.”
McQueen also noted the efforts of numerous volunteers from JCJC, especially Physical Plant Director Petey Barnett.
“Without Petey, who heads up most everything with the golf tournament and does a lot of the legwork, our maintenance department and volunteers all throughout campus, this day would not be possible,” she said. “We certainly want to give a big ‘thank you’ to all of them and, of course, to Laurel Country Club for hosting the tournament.”
At the conclusion of play, a name was drawn allowing a golfer a chance to win a $1 million annuity, sponsored by Magnolia Real Estate, by making a shot from 165 yards away on hole No. 2.
Jerome Harless had the opportunity, but was unsuccessful.
