Lady Bobcats stun No. 19 Pearl River twice

POPLARVILLE – Jones County Junior College extended its winning streak to 11 games by stunning 19th-ranked Pearl River Community College twice here Thursday afternoon at Lady Wildcat Stadium.

The Lady Bobcats scored a run in the sixth inning and Ginger Lonergan made it stand up, as JCJC won the opener, 1-0. In game two, Lauren Candies won her 13th game of the season as the Lady Bobcats completed the sweep with a 6-1 decision.

JCJC is now 25-5 overall and 9-3 in the South Division. They will play at the division’s first place team, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs are currently 10-1 in the division.

Saturday’s doubleheader begins at noon and will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman and Mark Easley on the call. Airtime is 11:55 a.m.

Pearl River, 15-11 overall and 7-5 in the division, hosts Hinds at noon on Saturday.

Lady Bobcats 1, Lady Wildcats 0

The game was scoreless through five innings before the Lady Bobcats broke through in the sixth.

JCJC’s Shannon Mosley singled and advanced to third on a Jessmar Walters’ single. The Lady Wildcats tried to pick off Mosley at third, but threw the ball away, which allowed Mosley to score the game’s only run.

Lonergan went the distance for Jones. She allowed just three hits and struck out four, as she improved to 12-1 on the season.

Mosley singled twice, while Mallory Cowart tripled and Walters singled for JCJC.

Heather Hester, 6-6, took the loss. She went the distance, gave up four hits, struck out five and walked six. Hester also singled twice for the Lady Wildcats and Brittney Gary had one single.

JCJC scored four runs in the second inning.

Mosley led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Stacia Whitaker. Walters then came through with an RBI single and K.T. Perkins reached on an error. Kayla McDaniel was then hit by a pitch and Cowart delivered a two-run single. Jasmine Jefferson, running for Walters, scored on an error.

The Lady Bobcats made it 5-0 in the third. Alex Faciane singled and Mosley was hit by a pitch. Faciane then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.

Pearl River got an RBI double from Janessa Dedeaux in the fifth to make it 5-1.

JCJC closed the scoring with a run in the seventh. Whitaker walked and Jefferson entered as a pinch-runner. Jefferson would then score on a single by Garcich.

Candies went 6 1/3 innings and got the win, improving her record to 13-4. She scattered 10 hits and struck out three. Lonergan got the final two outs, including one by strikeout.

Cowart had three singles for the Lady Bobcats, while Faciane doubled and singled. Garcich, Haley Brooke Smith and Walters added singles.

Sheila Hall, 8-5, went the distance and took the loss. She gave up eight hits, walked four and struck out one. Brittney Gary, Paris Redd, Brandy Rester and Samantha Spence had two singles each for Pearl River. Dedeaux doubled and Hester added a single.
