Bobcat netters down Hinds

ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College tennis teams had a successful afternoon here Thursday at the Bobcat Tennis Courts against Hinds Community College.

The Bobcat men beat the Eagles, 7-2, while the Lady Bobcats edged Hinds, 5-4.

Both Bobcat teams are now 8-2 on the year.

JCJC travels to Co-Lin Community College on Monday with the men’s match beginning at 2 p.m. and the women’s match starting at 3:30 p.m.

Hinds goes to East Central on Monday.

Bobcats 7, Eagles 2

JCJC swept the doubles’ points and took four of the six singles’ matches.

In No. 1 doubles, JCJC’s Sam Thorold and Cade Sherman beat Nikita Lisov and Mikhail Pecherkin, 8-3. Nick Williams and Armand Deniakos defeated Donnell Myles and Morgan Brasher, 8-2, in No. 2 doubles, while Mitchell Smith and Casper Wansley claimed No. 3 doubles with an 8-2 decision over Eric Stubblefield and Jeremy Robinson.

Sherman whipped Myles, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 3 singles, while Deniakos downed Robinson, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 4 singles. Smith defeated Brashier, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 5 singles and Wansley blanked Stubblefield, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 6 singles.

Hinds recorded victories in No. 1 singles where Pecherkin beat Thorold, 6-4, 6-2, and in No. 2 singles where Lisov defeated Williams, 6-0, 6-1.

Lady Bobcats 5, Lady Eagles 4

The Lady Bobcats took two of the doubles’ matches and split the singles’ matches.

In No. 2 doubles, JCJC’s Arlette Cochran and Brandy Freeman beat Jennifer Hill and Grace Ga-as, 8-4, and Lauren Carpenter and Amber Long captured No. 3 doubles over Elizabeth Bethea and Janella Campbell, 8-4. Hinds’ Natasha Grytsiak and Oksano Fumeko won No. 1 doubles over Rachel Jefcoat and Alison Rudolph, 8-2.

Freeman defeated Hill, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 3 singles, while Rudolph whipped Ga-as, 6-1, 6-0, in No. 4 singles.

The clincher in the match was in No. 6 singles where Long rallied to beat Campbell, 4-6, 6-0, 10-8.

Grytsiak beat Jefcoat, 6-1, 6-3, in No. 1 singles, while Fumeko defeated Cochran, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 2 singles and Bethea downed Carpenter in No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
