ELLISVILLE – One costly inning proved to be the difference for the Jones County Junior College Bobcats.
The Baton Rouge Community College (La.) Bears scored three runs in the fourth inning on just one hit, but took advantage of two JCJC errors and went on to a 4-2 victory here Tuesday evening at Community Bank Park. The Bobcats ended up committing five errors in the game.
The victory was the 13th straight for BRCC, as they improved to 24-7 on the season.
JCJC fell to 15-9 with the loss. The game was a makeup game from a rainout on Feb. 9.
The Bobcats will return to South Division play with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday against Southwest Mississippi Community College. The second game will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman on the call.
BRCC will visit Southwest on Thursday.
Bears 4, Bobcats 2
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth and the Bobcats looked as though they would get out of the inning unscathed.
But with nobody on and two outs, BRCC’s Josh Perez hit a ground ball to third baseman Chase Headrick. Headrick’s throw barely pulled first baseman Nick Ray off the bag and Perez reached with the error. Perez stole second and advanced to third when catcher Ryan Roberts’ throw went into centerfield. Lee Elisar then drew a walk to put runners on first and third.
A wild pitch scored Perez and Elisar advanced to second. Jami Rachel was then hit by a pitch. Josh Crowdus – the No. 9 BRCC batter – then hit a two-run triple into the rightfield corner to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.
BRCC expanded the lead to 4-0 in the fifth with another two-out rally. A.C. Lowrance singled and Jesse Burrat followed with a double. A wild pitch would score Lowrance.
The Bobcats got a run in the fifth when Graham Odom led off with a walk and went to second on a ground out by Zach Allen. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ladd Rhodes’ sacrifice fly to rightfield.
The Bobcats added a run in the sixth when Ray was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With two outs, Headrick doubled to right-center to score Ray.
JCJC would strand a single runner in the sixth, seventh and eighth, but could not push another run across the plate.
Chase Stewart, the second of five Bobcat pitchers, took the tough-luck loss. He gave up three runs (none earned), one hit, walked two and struck out two, as he fell to 0-1 on the year. Starter Blake McIlwain went two innings, allowed one hit and fanned two. Josh Palmer was the third pitcher of the game, allowing one earned run on three hits in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one. Ryan Waters pitched the sixth inning, giving up a hit and getting a strikeout. Andrew Pierce tossed the final three innings, allowing no hits, walking two (one intentional) and striking out five.
Rhodes and Ray each singled twice for the Bobcats, while Headrick doubled and Chad Guice singled.
Andrew Forbes was the starter and winner. He went five innings, allowed one earned run, three hits, walked three and struck out three. Austin Young tossed two innings, giving up one earned run and two hits.
Jordan Calandro notched the save. He gave up no runs, one hit and struck out two.
Crowdus tripled and singled for BRCC, while Burrat doubled. Blaine Posey, Cade LeBlanc and Lowrance added singles.
