Bobcats fifth in Northwest Miss. CC Invitational

 HORN LAKE – Jones County Junior College is in fifth place after the first round of the Northwest Mississippi Community College Invitational.

JCJC posted a team score of 318 during Monday’s opening round here at North Creek Golf Course.

The host Rangers are on top in the 10-team event after shooting a 297, three shots better than second place Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, which shot a 300. East Mississippi Community College is third at 307, followed by Co-Lin Community College at 311.

Individually, the Bobcats were led by Mitchell Smith’s 78. Markas Holifield had a 79, while Logan Parish shot an 80. Braxton Spiers fired an 81 and Ryan Blackwell had an 82.

Northwest’s Cameron Thomas blazed the course with a 5-under par 67 for the day’s top score. MGCCC’s Marcus Fox is four shots back after shooting a 71 and Bulldog teammate Rory Nelson is third with a 72.

The tournament concludes Tuesday at Wedgewood Golf Club in Olive Branch. There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start for round two.
