Bobcats split opening South Division twinbill at Co-Lin

WESSON – Jones County Junior College began South Division play on the road here Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
In game one, sophomore Andrew Pierce tossed a four-hitter to lead the Bobcats to an 8-1 decision over the Co-Lin Community College Wolves. Co-Lin rebounded in game two to beat JCJC, 5-2.
The Bobcats will return home to Community Bank Park on Saturday to meet Pearl River Community College in another division doubleheader. Game one begins at 2 p.m. Both games will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman doing the play-by-play. Airtime is 1:55 p.m.
Co-Lin will host Southwest Mississippi at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Bobcats 8, Wolves 1
Pierce was one out away from throwing a shutout until Tyler Reeves hit a pinch-hit home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh.
Pierce improved to 3-1 on the season with his usual efficient performance. He allowed four hits, walked none and struck out seven.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Darion Hamilton walked and with two outs, stole second base. He scored on Graham Odom’s single to center.
JCJC made it 2-0 in the third when Ladd Rhodes led off with a walk and advanced on a single to right by Nick Ray. Vito Perna’s fielder’s choice groundout scored Rhodes.
The Bobcats added a run in the fourth. Ryan Roberts was hit by a pitch and was replaced by courtesy runner Jarrett Jenkins. Odom sacrificed Jenkins and Zach Allen delivered a run-scoring single to center.
The Wolves threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Pierce gave up a pair of two-out singles. Co-Lin’s Zac Ferguson then hit a ground ball up the middle, but Allen – playing second base – went well to his right, gloved the ball and threw him out at first base to end the inning.
JCJC went up 5-0 in the fifth. Guice hit a deep fly ball to left that was dropped for a two-base error. Ray drew a walk and Hamilton followed with a drive down the right field line then went into the corner for a two-run triple.
The Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Guice led off with a single to center and Ray followed with a double to right. Perna’s groundout scored Guice and Hamilton came through with a double to left-center, scoring Ray. After a strikeout, Roberts doubled to right to score Hamilton.
Hamilton tripled and doubled for the Bobcats, while Ray doubled and singled. Odom and Allen each singled twice. Roberts added a double and Guice singled.
Reeves homered for the Wolves, while Edmund Cheatham, Kolby Byrd and Willie Buckley added singles.
Ben McDowell started and took the loss. He went 3 2/3 innings, allowed three runs, three hits, walked two and struck out two. Tripp Jolly pitched 1 1/3 innings, gave up two runs, one hit, walked one and struck out three. T.J. Floyd went the final two innings. He gave up three runs, six hits, walked none and struck out one.
Wolves 5, Bobcats 2
Co-Lin scored four runs in the third inning and made it stand up to salvage the split.
JCJC scored its only two runs in the fifth. Allen led off with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Guice then walked and Ray doubled to right-center to score Allen. Perna’s infield single then scored Guice, but reliever Cody Wall got a 5-4-3 double play grounder to end the inning.
In the Wolves’ third inning, Steven Capistran reached on a fielder’s choice and Cheatham followed with a bloop single. Courtesy runner Seth Avants would score on a wild pitch and Dehendret Collins followed with a walk. Bud Britt then hit a deep fly ball to left that fell to the ground for a long single, which loaded the bases.
Byrd’s ground out scored a run and Collins would later score on another wild pitch. Buckley’s infield single scored Britt with the fourth run.
The Wolves added their final run in the fifth. Britt singled and Byrd doubled into the rightfield corner. Buckley’s sacrifice fly to right scored Britt.
Blake McIlwain started and took the loss for JCJC. He went 2 2/3 innings, gave up four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one. Chase Stewart went 1 2/3 innings, allowed two hits and one run. Josh Palmer pitched 1 1/3 innings, gave up one hit and a walk. Jaron Bailey got the final out for the Bobcats.
Perna had two singles for JCJC, while Ray doubled. Chase Headrick and Odom had singles.
Ryan Kennedy went the first 4 1/3 innings and got the win. He gave up one run, three hits, walked six and hit one. Cody Wall went the final 2 2/3 innings and recorded a save. He allowed two hits and was helped out by a pair of double plays.
Britt and Cheatham each singled twice for Co-Lin. Byrd had a double, while Buckley and Capistran had singles.
