SUMMIT – Pitching, defense and clutch hitting were crucial for the Jones County Junior College softball team here Friday afternoon.
The Lady Bobcats used all of those factors to win two key South Division games over the Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears.
JCJC got a five-hitter from Ginger Lonergan and a pair of two-out, RBI singles from Alex Faciane to take the opener, 3-1. In game two, Lauren Candies tossed a three-hitter and Faciane drove in the game’s only run as the Lady Bobcats posted a 1-0 decision.
JCJC is now 17-5 overall, 3-3 in division play. The team surpassed its win total of last year – 16 – with the sweep. The Lady Bobcats will not play again until March 22 when they visit Meridian Community College for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
SMCC falls to 9-7 overall, 2-2 in the division. The Lady Bears will go to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for a doubleheader on March 22.

JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Mallory Cowart led off the game by reaching on a bunt single and was sacrificed to second by Haley Brooke Smith. Faciane would then deliver a two-out, RBI single.
The Lady Bobcats used the same plan of attack in the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Cowart singled, was sacrificed to second by Smith and scored on a two-out, Faciane single.
SMCC made it 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Brooke Szigeti doubled and Tipheri Grimes singled. With runners on first and third, Grimes attempted a steal of second. The throw hit her and bounced away, allowing Szigeti to score.
JCJC added a run in the seventh. Kayla McDaniel singled and Jasmine Jefferson entered as a pinch-runner. Stacia Whitaker singled to put runners on first and third.
Brittany Daniel came in to run for Whitaker. She stole second base, was hit by the throw, it bounced away and Jefferson came home to score.
The Lady Bobcat defense then came up big.
In the bottom of the seventh, SMCC’s first batter hit a deep drive to right, but McDaniel went back, reached over the fence and took a potential home run away. JCJC second baseman Shannon Mosley then made a diving stop on a hard hit grounder and threw the runner out for the inning’s second out. The final out was routine.
In the circle, Lonergan was excellent. She allowed one run, five hits, hit one and struck out six as she improved to 8-1.
Cowart, Faciane and Whitaker each singled twice for JCJC. Jessmar Walters and McDaniel added singles.
Ashlyn Grisaffe took the loss.
